4-Axis Milling with Rotation about c-axis

Hi,

 

I'm looking to do 4-axis machining for a very specific application. This application requires x,y and z movement as well as rotation in the z-axis (or c-axis rotation). This means that I need the part to rotate about the same axis that the drill bit is in. 

I am new to Fusion, but any rotation seems to be turning it into a lathe, or x/y-axis rotation. Is it possible to have the drill in the same axis as the rotation part?
NOTE: For this application, I need to rotate in z, followed by a straight line in x/y, and then rotate again. Therefore, it is not pure rotation in the c-axis as there will be linear movement in addition to the rotation.

Hi Seth,

Attached is a sample part just quickly made to give you an idea of what I need to do. I need to rotate along the curves in the pocket, while go straight along the straight parts in the pocket. 

For a better understanding, the application is to glue the walls of the pocket (Not actually mill it). Therefore, the bit has to be in line with the part at all times to glue.

Ok, so I think I still need a bit more info. What sort of machine kinematics do you have? What post processor are you planning on using?
With the sample you provided, your part would easily be solved by a C axis lathe, no Y axis required

I am planning on using what is basically a 3 axis CNC machine with an additional stepper motor. The z movement is in the head and the x/y is in the base of the machine. I am planning on mounting the stepper motor upright onto the base. This seems to be an uncommon application where the bit is parallel with the c-axis. 

 

We will be using Fusion 360 and Mach 3.

I believe, as the rotation is about the center of the part, that when it rotates along the curved surface it may require simultaneous x/y movement and c-axis rotation to achieve consistently hitting the sides of the wall.
