Workflow: revision management and cleanup of messy models

I need some advice.

1) revision management: How do you proceed when you need to make major changes to a model file, that far exceed what you can do with variables and configurations. You want to be sure that you can access the original, how do you handle that? I might want to refer back to the original design while doing the new variant. And if the new variant is a disaster then be confident that you can easily get back to the last good one?

2) cleanup: How do you proceed if you have a model that has evolved over time, and there are sketches no longer used, variables no longer used, bodies that are always hidden and so on? Simply deleting something often gives a warning that doing that may affect other things that are dependent on it. The only way to find out is by trying to delete and even then you are not quite sure.

1 if it is major diversion, why do you need to refer to original?  Frankly I keep sketches and proceed with new features.

2.  Clean out the file by stepping from right to left down the timeline.  If a delete warning is given, you keep it.

Might help….
