What is really possible with T-Splines.....

So some coworkers keep talking about how limited T-Splines usefulness is. To be honest it's not limitations of T-Splines or Fusion it's the person using them and their knowledge of the tools. I have even seen post here on the boards downing on T-Splines.

So anyways a friend challenged me to a bet, he claims I can not get the orc head model from Topogun into Fusion 360 as a CAD model fully editable. The head is made up of over a million polygons. Almost 2 million. Here is what the highres model looks like.

Highres.png

The challenge was two fold:

1st part is to model the head using only Fusion 360 and that's what I am going to post today.

2nd part is I can use whatever tools I have as long as I end up with a fully editable CAD model.

So anyways here is what I came up with after 3 hours in Fusion Sculpt environment using just T-Splines.

T-Spline Test2 v1 v1.png

T-Spline Test3 v1 v1.png

Here is a video showing that the T-Spline mesh is fully editable:

I am not happy with this at all but I think it's a good start. More to come....
Cheers

@TrippyLighting

"UV mapping is not just helpful for pretty pictures!"

Another case in point and more along the lines of direct CAD value....Say I have a model and on that model I need to place a bunch of other models. If I had a UV Mapped texture say all white with red dots on it. The software could grab the location of the red dots and place the other models on the base mesh at those locations.

And yet another case for the collaboration value, if you were using the markup feature on A360 someone could color in a part of the model and attach a note to that colored area.

There are a million other uses for UV + everything you said.

Guys, we have several UV enhancements in the roadmap. What are you needing the most?

I need to be able to make a UV Map that I can export. It would be nice to have the UV Map in .png format. Like this:

@O.Tan

Thanks for the kind words.

So in the interest of getting my boss on board with Fusion 360 I modeled one of our parts from work.

This was using Solid, Surface and T-Splines.....I absolutely love being able to work with all 3 together.

This will speed my work flow up 10 fold.....

It must be pointed out the twenty years of practise you have applied here. Also I would piont out that this workflow is indicative of actuly what users are looking for!

Well at least this user!

@PhilProcarioJr Your comment on having a different mind set is the biggest truth I have read on any part of this forum.

 you talk about filling gaps between cad and scanning.

As as you say you have to change your mind set.

The work you do, showcases exactly what can be achieved when you free your mind from the prescribed format. Plus hard work and practise time.

As to you status. Yeah, expert elite, I dont think applies to you any more!

Nice work @PhilProcarioJr, out of curiosity which parts are T-Spline and which are Solid?

Met up with Simon and his dad yesterday and had some great conversation. Thanks for that Simon.

@colin.smith

The area in Blue was the T-Spline Area. Originally I was trying to loft it and after a bunch of failures it dawned on me just use T-Spines. Seems trying to loft a Y shape where the top two splits are different is next to impossible, and if I did the lofts separately they either wouldn't line up properly or gave me a bad surface. I had the same problems in Solidworks so.....

Here was a quick 5 min stab at creating some leather straps attached to a ring, needs a lot of work...

5 minutes to model and render that???

****, I'm using Fusion wrong, lol. I just make simple sketches and extrusions (Press/Pull) for the average things flowing through my machine shop..

Yep 5 min, maybe a little under.

Here was another 5 min test in my quest to master CAD accurate T-Splines.

@PhilProcarioJr

I should be thanking you. Your help and encouragement mean a great deal to me. It has put me on the path I wanted to follow but never knew what to ask for.

You will be pleased to know I have started looking into what you told me to look into. I will continue for a while yet. Then I will send you a summery of my findings for your overview!

I am learning a lot. Strange the way you start to see things differently. When someone shows how to start looking at it.

The visit with you was worth the 4000miles alone. Let alone the other stuff I got done on Saturday!

Thanks Phil!

I'm glad I could help you out!

Here is a real world example of the test I did earlier on in this thread.

I'm finding the freedom of T-Splines very inspirational.

Are the Indents on the base plate done with a three way symmetry line.  or with a pattern sweep?

@PhilProcarioJr

Aghh cool!

I'm heading to the air port in two hours time!

But I will be back!

See you again next time mate! But I will email you much sooner. I got some good info from that motor company. But I have to check a few things before I order.

What with that and the assignments I have to work on from you I'm going to be a very busy boy.

I have started to do a little practise one a stock that's nots so involved. But I'm not rushing. I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I attempt any thing. But then you have to start small right?

I aim to submit my first pages to you at the end of the month. For you to look through!

Nice lamp BTW! Good render that! Was it done with the same process demonstrated at yours?

Have a safe flight home mate!

My doors always open.

This was done entirely in Fusion 360 with T-Splines, solids and patches. Took about an hour for the whole thing.

This is just a rough model of what I want the final to look like. Needs a lot of work, but for an hour what can you expect?
