turning a model into a form for sculpture

I'm a beginner. Is it possible to do further work on a complex part created in the Model space by then choosing to Form it using the edge and face manipulators?

Can you post and example design or a picture of what you are asking?  you will get a much better answer that way.

Yes you can with Direct modeling and other techniques. If you can make a screencast of your model, I might be able to help.

Thanks for your reply. I have made a short screencast at http://autode.sk/2gGIP35

I am a complete novice and still experimenting with it. However I am in the process of designing a more complex, real component which is a complicated shape. It would be good if the basic shape can be done with the modelling tool and then modified here and there by sculpting it until it looks right. I feel sure this must be possible but can’t see a way to do it.
Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Hi @wessel8EGAY,

 

The Create Form (also knows as T-spline or Free Form modeling), is for creating a new form and not for editing a body. You need to be more specific, what exactly you want to do. You can either use Direct modeling or Parametric modeling (History base modeling).

 

Just let us know, how you want to edit the body and we will help you. I have also noticed that you are not familier with R.U.L.E #1 and I thing you should read about it before continuing!

If I understand you correctly you can do this but it is not as simple as selecting your solid model and hitting a form button.

Depending on how complex the model is can make it quite a challenge to convert to a T-Spline.

based on the model in your video I don't see how converting this into a sculpt for will be helpful.

As @Beyondforce said what exactly do you want to do with it?

@wessel8EGAYHi there, if I were not wrong, your intention is to modify each faces of your model by "Create Form" or "Sculpting" environment.

 

A simple way to do that is to use the Convert Function at "Utilities" at  "Create Form", select the type of face to be converted, use form edit to edit the face. Then End the create form function and perform a "Replace Face" function at the Modify manual.

 

Bear in mind that when you ended the "Create Form function" the two faces are there. The T-Splint and the B-Rep. You have to select the faces to be replace. Before doing that, you might have to dim out one of the faces before doing that. At the Parametric Mode, the newly edited face is still there after the replace face operations. You can move the edited face away from the original face by moving it in the Create Form Environment. Then you can see the effect better.

 End Create Form and select Replace face at the Modify Manual

 Dim out the Edited face and select the face to be replaced as Source Faces

 Light up the Edited face and select that as "Target Face" Your solid is modified. But remember, the Edited face is still there. You can dim it out again. Do not delete that at the parametric Mode

That's great for square shaped faces but non-square it's not so simple. Also all the conversion and sculpting should be done before adding things like holes, fillets and chamfers.

@PhilProcarioJr@wessel8EGAYThanks for pointing that out. But depending what he wanted to do, according to his video, he wanted to change the faces. Even if a hole was there before the conversion, after the replace face function the hole will still be there but modified somewhat.

That's correct but also understand Fusion is a lot more stable if you do the holes afterwards.

I have run into a lot of problems relying on the geometry engine figuring things like this out.

Also keep in mind your doing this on a block and you will encounter more failures on complex models.

It's great that you showed this method, I just want people to be aware how quickly things can go wrong if you don't tackle problems like this with Fusion's limitations in mind.

Hi Luvmesweet!

Thanks so much. Your instructions seem to have worked. In your last sentence you say the edited face can be moved away from the original in the Create Form Environment. But how and why would I want to? I can’t get hold of it with the mouse as at that stage as
it’s all dimmed out.

There are many basics that I still find hard so you may get many more questions from me! Part of my problem I think is that I am coming from years spent with 2D Turbocad; that is a drawing program, not a modelling one, so the conceptual approach is very different. My left and right mouse clicking habits don’t work as expected with Fusion.

@wessel8EGAYHi, thanks for your reply. I made a typo error. In fact, you do not have to go back to Create Form to move the "Surface  Body" away from the block.

If you look closely to my other post, you will notice that I moved the "Body 2" away from the modified face. Body 2 is a surface, not a closed solid. When you replace the face the original face will be changed but the "Body 2" surface will still be there. That might be the characteristic of the parametric mode. All history recorded.  You can right click on "Body 2" at the "Browser Tree" and select "Move" and drag the resulting manipuator to move the "Body 2" surface away. Then you can see the result better. Or just "Dim" out the light bulb of Body 2.

 

Learning Fusion might take some time, because it is a multifunction tool. It was designed with the designers in mind at the beginning. You should use your existing model and start modifying it using different methods and tools to get used to the different environments. The team behind Fusion is a great team and they can always help at this forum or you can even call them. Watch their various videos.

 

I started using Fusion since it was at the Beta days so I might understand the program a little more than you do at this time. If I were to start learning Fusion today I will be at your same position. I think you might have to start from a new idea, then start to use the various forms to make the model that you wanted. That will get you started into something great!

 

Practicing is important. Fusion is already one of the easiest 3D programs on the market. As a designer myself, I would not use any other 3D tools except Fusion. It got me started in my product designing many years ago.

 

I switched account due to country reseller problem and looks like a new account.

 

I have to prepare for a trip to other country tomorrow. So I cannot answer you for a while. Other users here will be able to help you more. Best of Luck! You will feel great after a few more weeks using Fusion!
