Transferring a part from one file to another

I have two diffrent files, in one there is a part that is complicated enough that I would rather not rebuild it in the new file but instead transfer it in. Can I copy and paste?. Is it possible to move it?

Thanks, Caleb J-M.

Hi @Anonymous,

Does the file with the complex component only contain the one part or does it contain multiple parts that you don't want to import into the new design. If the file only contains the one part than all you have to do is just drag the file from your data panel onto your layout in Fusion 360 (assuming that you have new design open). This will automatically prompt a "Move" dialog box to come up.

If the original has multiple components/bodies and you only want to import one of those, you can just right click the component/body from the browser tree and select "Save As" and repeat the steps from above.

Here is a screencast I made showing how to do all of that:

Hopefully this answered all of your questions. If so, please feel free to mark this answer as a solution, that way others can benefit from this thread as well. If you have any more questions or would like some clarification, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm more than happy to help!

I just copy and paste. I have never 'saved' as anything.

Choose the bodies you want transfer, right click, choose 'Copy', go to the other file, and choose 'Paste'. If the timeline is on turn it off before you paste. Or if you don't want to turn it off, you can only paste components, so first in the original file, create a new component and put the bodies, into it, right click, choose 'Copy', go to the destination file and choose 'Paste New. You can copy and paste sketches and canvases as well.

Hmmm  I have been trying to import one model into another without success.  If I drag it into the current model, everything disappears and I have no Idea how to get it back.  I have to kill it and start over.

It is unclear what you are attempting to do from your description, perhaps you could create a video showing your process.  In the meantime, in my video, I demonstrate one way of Copying a Component from one file to another.  You cannot drag bodies freely so I suspect you are trying to drag components.

It is a good idea to create your own Forum Post instead of adding your question to the end of an old post.  You will get a lot more eyeballs on your question in a new post.
