Static simulation of slotted tube in torsion

I'm trying to simulate a 1m long tube with 4 axial slots, subjected to a torsional load.  I would like to know the maximum torsional load before deformation.  I have run a simulation which predicts a deflection of 1.7mm.  To verify if this is correct I have taken a piece of steel tube the same as the model and loaded it in the same way.  The actual deflection is 5mm.  I wondering why there is such a large difference.  Have I modelled it incorrectly?

Hi mikeF5LEG,

Thanks for using Fusion Simulation. Is it possible to post the f3d files so that we can look at the load values, references, constraints? Thanks

Best regards

Hi Michael,

Using your attached f3d file I had problems in Simulation. The Simulation workspace showed no browser. Please see NoBrowser.png. This may be a separate issue.

Using the file from the link you provided it worked. On solving I got results and the maximum displacement was 3.203mm. Please see 10254slot.png and its corresponding f3d, 1025 4 slot v3.

I Save As your file to a new file (as it was easier than creating a new simulation model in the same file) as. 1025 4 slotwithoutslots v3.f3d and then deleted the circular pattern of the slots including the original. This way all slots were gone in this model. I solved and got a Max displacement of 0.3853 as shown in 10254slotwithoutslots.png and 1025 4 slotwithoutslots v3.f3d. Now the tube has more material so displacements must go down so it is sounding reasonable pending any more detailed examination.

In short I'm not getting your values so its possible you have different files involved. For now there is not much we can do unless more information is provided.

Best regards

Attaching the f3d files separately due to number of file limit per post.
