problem with visibility in tutorial

I'm at the bare beginning, just tried the desk lamp base tutorial. I have freshly started Fusion 360 with literally a blank slate--I have a solid gray screen, no grid.

When I Create->Cylinder the first step is to pick the plane. Only then does the grid appear. I select the plane and size the cylinder. When I'm done, I have no grid and no cylinder. If I hover over where the cylinder should be, one face or another of it appears. I can select that face and it stays blue and visible until I de-select it by clicking elsewhere.

Why can't I see what I draw? Is this some graphics problem on my laptop?

T61, Windows 7

Thank you,

Steve

Try changing your background or your view representation. If you click the monitor looking button towards the bottom of your screen a list will pop out. There you'll be able to adjust the environment, display view (I honestly like solid with visible edges), and effects. Adjust until you have something that works for you. If you're still having issues we can go from there.

From the monitor symbol, I tried all of the visual styles. They all give the same results. Without the cursor on screen, I have a solid medium gray. Mouse over the cylinder and I can cause any one of the top, sides or edges (circles) to appear, but only the one the mouse is directly indicating.

With the visual style set to "shaded with visible edges", I stepped through all the environments. There were pauses for recalculation but all gave the same result; solid medium gray background until I mouse over some part of the cylinder.

Under "object visibility" all items are checked (I have not changed this).

Thanks,

Steve

It appears this is unsolvable. Thanks for looking.

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Fusion 360 Community!

Sorry that it took so long to get a response out to you, unfortunately we can get a spread a little thin over the weekends, but we are diligently working on changing that! Do you think you could go ahead and create a screencast documenting your error? This way I can get a better idea of what is going on and diagnose it further. You can download screencast from the following link: https://screencast.autodesk.com/

Thanks,

After reading the details of the license, I am much less interested in Fusion 360. It looks like it is only available for personal use for one year. Understandable, but not what I will need.

This makes me uninclined to learn yet more software in screencast, simple as it may be.

Thanks anyway,

Steve

Hello @Anonymous

Please dont leave us - that will make us sad :-).

Jokes aside, you have access to Fusion 360 free of charge for personal for as long as you need it. One year term that you see is just for you to reaffirm every year that you are using it for personal use - all it takes is a couple of clicks to renew your Startup subscription.

If you are still unsure, please feel free to PM me or send me a direct eMail:

I read more into the license than I should have. I will try the screencast, hopefully tomorrow.

Thank you,

Steve

I finally have time to do this--lots going on at this end.

I've recorded the screencast and uploaded it to wherever Screencast puts these. If you don't find it, please let me know what I should do with it.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for creating a screencast, I now see what you are saying. As you originally mentioned, I do believe this is graphics related? Just to check, according to your system information file is your Graphics Driver up to date? Can you please perform the following steps for me:

1. Launch %windir%\system32\msinfo32.exe
2. Select Save from the File drop down menu (CTRL + S)
3. Please email me at james.youmatz@autodesk.com with the resulting *.NFO file attached

This will tell us more information about what is going on. Also, one thing you can try while I'm looking at the file is to limit the graphics effects. You can do this by going into the help menu in Fusion (top right corner) and selecting Graphics Diagnostics. This will pop up a dialog box and at the bottom will be a checkbox that says "Limit all effects to provide optimum performance." Go ahead and check this and see if it helps the issue. I have a feeling it won't matter too much, but it is something to check.

Let me know when you send the .NFO file. Thank you and I'm certain we can get Fusion 360 up and working for you really quickly!

Thanks,

I've emailed my NFO file, subject "Problem with visibility NFO".

I tried the Limit all effects to no avail, as you suspected. I did try to update my video driver during install and was unsuccessful, but I don't remember the reason. I will be happy to try again if recommended.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi @Anonymous,

Yep, that was going to be my suggestion. Few things to note - your physical RAM just meets the requirement of 3GB of RAM to run Fusion and your graphics card seems to be a bit low for the amount of RAM it needs. (Yours is 384 MB as to the recommended 512 MB). Also, as you suggested the driver date is a little outdated (looks like it was last updated in 2009). A link for the graphics driver updates for your card is:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81508/Graphics-Drivers-for-Mobile-Intel-965-Express-Chipset-Family

Also, for reference, here are our systems requirements:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81508/Graphics-Drivers-for-Mobile-Intel-965-Express-Chipset-Family

Hopefully updating the graphics driver solves the issue! Let me know if you run into any problems again and hopefully we can figure something out!

Thanks,

With memory marginal, I understand why starting Fusion takes so long. Unfortunately, I'm stuck on both memory and graphics for now.

I tried the Intel Driver Update Utility. It finds 15.12.75.4.64.1930 (10/2/2009). Downloads but the install fails.

I downloaded manually from the link you supplied. Ran setup "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software".

Looking at the Graphics Drivers for Mobile Intel 965 page, my system has plain 965 graphics. This is not listed on the driver pages--it shows G965 but no plain 965. Looks like I'm out of luck.

Thanks anyway,

Steve
