possible to extrude to a surface?

Here is a what I have done.

It is not what I want to do.

I would like to have the medallion curved just below the surface of the model.

Not recessed into the model like I have done.

Is this possible?

do I have to place the sketch on the curved surface and do an extrude cut?

I would like the text and other features to stand straight up but only up to the surface of the grip.

Does that make sense?

I should be able to look straight on to the medallion and it could appear flat but when observed from the side of the grip it rises up to the surface like a curved coin.

I know I may be asking the impossible.

Thanks JC

Extrude between an offset surface and the face.

Attach your *.f3d file here if you can't figure it out.

Try selecting From Object on the extrude dialog, select the curved face then set the depth.

Ok I see that, Thank you it helps me a lot.

I guess I worded my question wrong.

I have a medallion that I want to place on dozens of curved surfaces with different curvatures on each.

Re-sizing the medallion takes time and then I have to basically start over with my extrudes since it is a new curve I am trying to extrude "on".

Do I have to extrude a new medallion (which means then shelling and extruding hundreds of little items).

Or is there a way to take an already extruded and shaped body and drape it across a curve?

I think not but it would make my operations faster.

I am trying to take similar medallions and place them on different items such as cups, weapons, plaques, baseball bats etc. but instead of just a 2d etch I wanted to do the full 3D like the medallion in the drawing.

If I can figure out a way to do this conveniently then I could do this with a small router in front of people instead of taking a few days to measure and redraw the item to have the medallion routed onto.

Thanks a lot for your help JC

Does that make sense?

The sheetmetal function might help, not sure when it's going to be released, see this thread for some examples. It will only work for surfaces curved in one direction though.

It should only take a few seconds to create the base curved component when you use dimensions/parameters to create it.  In this video I'm only showing how to create the base.  Use the technique by @JDMather and @HughesTooling to extrude the medallion.  You'll need to experiment to see if you need to extrude the medallion before or after changing the base parameters.

You can create a tapered base using the loft command between two sketches with a 3 point arcs on each.
