parting line draft

hi

im doing some of the model mania solid works projects i am currently doing model mania 2004 phase 1

In solid works when creating a draft you can choose a parting line instead of a plane is there a way to achieve this with fussion

this is on the top part of the model

Hi @Anonymous,

I want to help, but I don't understand what you need. Could you please make a screencast, that will help a lot!

I need to do this also.  Doesn't seem to be possible in Fusion.

We need to be able to draft from a parting line (edge of the model or split face line).  This means that when draft is applied from a curved edge, that edge remains intact and design intent is maintained.  See screen shot from another package before and after versus fusion draft.

Are you asking why the thickness of the edges are not maintained in Fusion?

My apologies, I'm still not sure where is the problem. Maybe @jeff_strater could help with this?

Hi

I know why the edges are not maintained.  It is because Fusion only has neutral plane drafting.  The draft command need to have a parting line draft option.  It is quite a fundamental requirement for moulded or cast part design.

Thanks

But don't forget, that in Fusion you can achieve the same thing in many different ways. Maybe the draft tool cannot give you the results that your are looking for, then you should something else.
If you could send me a picture of what you want to create, maybe I'll be able to help you to find another way of doing it in Fusion.

It is a simple part that I am working on.  See attached pic.

Thanks

By the way, have you seen the video that made on how to create a Rim?

Rim looks good.  To have your rim cast though, you would need to put draft on it.

I have made it because someone asked me if I could show him how to create a Rim in Fusion. So I looked for a Rim for inspiration and that's what came out in the end 🙂

This might not be the ideal way to do it, but if you're having trouble with the built-in draft functionality in Fusion, you could try simply rotating that face. Fusion 360, since a recent update, allows for directly moving individual faces with the move command while in design-history (parametric) mode. Simply select the face and click the move command (or click the move command, choose face from the drop down, and select the face). You can then set the pivot point to be the midpoint of the line at the top and rotate the face away. This might not always work with all geometry, but it's pretty robust.

Thanks n8bot

I hadn't noticed the move/rotate face command looks really good.

For this part I need to have a uniform draft angle against line of draw whilst maintaining those edges exactly, no movement. Moving the faces with a rotate messes with both the draft angle and the edge position unfortunately.:)

I think from a product design (which includes design for manufacture) point of view, not having parting line draft capability in the software will be a big sticking point for companies who are considering the software as their design tool.
