Modeling without sketching - Enjoy!

Hey All,

This is just something I decided to do for fun. The whole idea is was to create a model without a single sketch. This is a result of 20 min. work, but obviously I could have spend more time on the small details.

I also wanted to prove that in Fusion 360, you can accomplish a lot without so much effort. If you like it and want to know how I did it or the file, please let me know.

Very nice!

Organizing and re-organizing an assembly in direct modeling mode is also much easier.

The tricky part is to figure out when to use direct modeling and when to use history/timeline based modeling and even trickier when and how to combine the two 😉

There was a really nice Autodesk Univeristy Class I had the proiviledge to whitnessin person this yer that had irect modeling as the subject. Here's a link to the rcording.

As many of these classes, this on also has a downloadable handout in the "Materials" section on the web page.

I'll take you up on that offer as I'm sure I could learn something from it.

Thanks!

@TrippyLighting, I haven't used Direct Modeling at all, just a good old fashioned HBM and few basic tools.

@Anonymous, the file is attached.

@Beyondforce

My human skeleton project was made without any sketches. Actually the skies the limit......Sketches are just nice for nailing down accuracy and adding parametrics.

I think it could be a good idea to have a place, where people can post their Free-Sketch assembly models, which doesn't include T-spline or DM, that's cheating! 😉

A lot of people handup on sketches and complex sketches and they don't realise that they can actually accomplish a lot without sketches. You have all the basic tools in Fusion 360, just use your imagination.

Now that I've had time to look at the actual file, I have to say that this is nicely done!

It is a form of hybrid modeling using techniques that can be useful in both direct and parametric modeling. If a user has good grasp of how primitives can be combined to create complex shapes using primitives and the combine tools a somewhat parametric design can be created in the  the direct modeling environment as the basis dimensions of the primitives are parametric.

This somewhat reminscent of how I had to create complex shapes using CSG in DKBtrace and POVray 25 years ago 😉

That's what happen 20 min. later, I just couldn't stop...

I think I'm going to start this model from the beginning. It was just a proof of concept and it seems to work better than I expected. I will keep you updated with the development. I believe it won't take long, I have some few new ideas for the process.

@TrippyLighting you are right. I'm using the same technique that you used 25 years ago and it's working beautifully!
I also wanted to show new F360 users, how easy it is to use a body as a tool and create almost anything with high precision without sketches.
It's all about the technique and I hope other people will contribute and show us new techniques. I'm good, but not that good 🙂

That's the idea Ben's design did give me, No Sketch F...* Challange.

I think that one of the biggest problem users have with sketches, are not the sketches them self but more general problem with design articulation.

Such contest (NSFC) would force everyone to think out of box.

I think I should be able to prepare a model for that challenge till Monday.

* F stands for Fusion 360 😛

Another step forward, but I'm not 100% happy with the Tire texture.
