Most of the insert Fastener tool is great. However I do not like how it just dumps them all into one folder above all components. I prefer having the ability to group fasteners into components to make editing and turning groups on and off.

One instance where this is very helpful in my workflow at work when setting up CNC jobs is adding hardware used in my fixture setups. I will create a component for op1 work holding, and another for op2. This makes my setup in manufacturing much quicker as I can just select the component I setup for fixturing. And if I need to make an edit, it auto updates without having to worry about missing something.

For me it adds the fastener to the active component. One thing to note is the fastener can only be anchored/jointed to part of the active component as well.

Below you can see the fastener has been added to whatever component was active. You can add the fastener to sub-components of the active component but not to other components from my tests.

Hmm, I'll have to play with it some more. Might be that I have only tried adding them to an empty component with joints to other components.

Might just have to change my workflow a little.

Hi  turtlecrawler,

thank you for youer feedback. As was mentioned below by , Fasteners are always inserted into the active component. In each Component you should see Fasteners folder and work with visibilite of them separately.

I strongly dislike this restriction. It basically forces you to put all fastners on the top level component instead of organizing them by subcomponent. Also annoyed that you can't right click and get the combined weight of all fasteners. These two restrictions make the tool unusable for me.

Imagine a robot with a chassis, tank tracks, and a claw. I want the bolts that mount the claw to the chassis to be in the claw component, but since the bolt needs to go through the chassis first, I'm forced to put them at the top level instead.

Hi David,
in your case .. robot with a chassis, tank tracks, and a claw.

If chassis component will be selected as an active component, you should see bolts in this component.
