I cannot select a face through the bottom plane

I am doing this tutorial: https://youtu.be/36uU1Z7OiJg?t=584

I created a pyramid, shelled it out, and from the bottom, I need to select the interior faces to create midline planes. However, when I attempt to select the individual faces - the entire bottom of the pyramid gets selected. It is as if I cannot select the faces which are above the XY plane.

The funny thing is that I created a hole in once face as I followed the tutorial, and I can select two of the interior faces from a view above the bottom plane looking in through the hole.

Thoughts?

need more info, preferably the model and a screencast of what you are trying to do.  It's just a little hard to tell from your description what problems you are having.

I used a similar model to the one on YouTube to demonstrate the process of selection the interior face(s).  Take a look at the Screencast.  You can use the outside faces to achieve the same Midplane since the geometry is the same, I demonstrated this as well.

Thank you- that is so helpful- it is strange that in the video tutorial the guy was able to select the faces no problem- it must just be that I am using a later version-

thanks again- your solution worked great.

Have you tried the face selection method of holding left mouse down over the face location? This should list all of the faces, profiles, edges, etc under the mouse point; you can then scroll the list to confirm and pick the face you want. If you do it with Shift, you can select more than one face this way.
