How to evenly space multiple objects

Hello, I'm trying t design a tray to hold Multiple Keyhole Marker pins. I have 10 Marker pins of different sizes, that I would like to space evenly across the width of the tray, so that I can then extrude the bottoms into the tray and cut out the holes so that they can fit in nicely.

I can't figure out how to evenly space these pins however. I tried the Rectangular pattern, with a spacing of 10mm and number of 1, but that does not do anything, if I select more that 1 than it multiplies the bodies

I tried to upload the .F3D file but it is too large, it's 100 mb and the upload limit is capped at 79mb. So I uploaded a picture instead.

Hi,

1. Create a pattern of position points on the base plate.
2. Convert existing bodies into components.
3. Connect the individual components to the base plate at the desired depth.
4. Create the cutouts using the “Combine” (keep tool body) command.

Thank you Gunther, I quickly tried that but it failed to cut out the objects when I did the combine feature but I'll try again tonight, thank you for the insight.

Something isn’t right, this geometry should not result in a large file. 
Start from scratch and attach the file here at each step before the file size gets large.
