How do I change the dimensions of a circle?

cjshull

I know it sounds like a stupid simple question, but I can't figure this out.  I've made a complex cylinder, and realized I need to adjust it diameter later in the process.  I rolled back the history to the circle sketch I started with, and I just want to change it's diameter.  How do you do it?

Left click to select the article involved.

When highlighted in blue, the Right Click Menu will change its content, Edit sketch will be in this Menu now, selecting that will edit the sketch the article belongs too.

Thank you for the feedback. That doesn't work though.

When you say the "article" I presume you mean the circle I'm trying to redimension?

I left clicked the circle, selecting it so it is highlighted in blue. I then right click it, which presents me with a menu. "Edit sketch" does not exist in this menu. And I can find now way to edit the size of an existing circle.

Help?

Yes "article" is any sketch article, not just circles - that are not Projected articles..

I double checked, it works as stated, with or without the Timeline active.

but if you are already editing your sketch, it will not be in the menu, so start the dimension tool.

Mash the "d" key on your keyboard.

What do you observe?

File>Export and then Attach your *.f3d file here

Sorry if I'm being dense here, but it doesn't.

I don't follow what you mean:

"...if you are already editing your sketch, it will not be in the menu, so
start the dimension tool."

I don't know what the definition of "editing" my sketch is. The file is
open. I'm looking at it. I've selected it. I'm trying to edit it. Are you
saying this will omit "edit sketch" from the ensuing menu?

I don't know what you mean "start the dimension tool." How do I "start" a
software tool? What is the tool? Where do I find it?

Starting at the beginning, on a blank screen, open up your saved model. On the left side of your screen, click on the arrow for sketches in the browser. Right click on the sketch that you want to edit then click on edit sketch. Then double click on the dimension that you want to change and then enter your new dimension, hit enter.

Then with these two pics, you should get past the road block,

Dsketch.PNG

You will be on this screen when you open the file, one sketch with a circle in it.  See at the end of the top menus toolbox area, there is a missing Icon called Stop Sketch.  At this position you are not editing your sketch, and you can change the circle.  Click and Drag the centre point, the whole circle will move.  Click and drag the curve, and the radius / diameter will change size.

Click and highlight the circle to be brighter blue, then Right Click menu, has Edit Sketch in the menu.  Select Edit Sketch in the Menu and you get this....

Dsketch1.PNG

Notice the new top menu Item, and the Sketch Palette in this window with Sketch tab in the top line, Here you are editing the sketch, and the Dimension tool is under Create, or press D, or left click the Dimension tool on the Tool box I have it ticked, but you may not have it in the toolbox, so use the Press D key.

Click on the Circle, drag out and place the Dimension and enter a value with the keyboard.

Might help,

@Anonymous  At any point have you disabled history then re enabled history (The timeline)? Hard to help if you don't show us any screen grabs or better still export the file as an f3d and attach here.

If at any point your file was in direct mode then you enable history the sketch is probably inside a base feature and the only way to edit is to edit the base feature first then edit the sketch.

You say:   "1. Right click select Edit on the sketch - your dimensions will now be visible again."

I see Sketch Arc | Radius : 4.243 mm in bottom right corner of window.

But the question is:  How can I change the radius?
No intuitive fiddling seems to work. I am a new user, Don

That would be, select the circle in the window, then Right Click the Mouse,

In that menu is "Edit Sketch", left click it.

In the window left click the circle again, and press D or Start the Dimension tool.

Enter the new value in the text box. Press enter.

Thanks for your amazingly quick reply!
I did manage to change the diameter, but was hit-and-miss difficult to
bring up a text box to enter a value.

But now I have another circle on the same screen  where right-click
brings up menu without  an "Edit Sketch" option.
Im baffled!  I will have to delete it and try again.
I will have to find other software if I cant avoid this erratic and
unintuitive behaviour when trying something that should be extremely
straightforward.

If you are already editing the sketch, that would happen, Fusion removes stuff from menus you can't have / don't need.

Make sure nothing is selected, my instructions will do it each time.

you can't manage to bring up a text box,

editing the dimension that exists, is double left click, the box always appears.

We can make this completely predictable and logical.

STOP what you are doing.

Install and start up Screencast Recorder (it might already be installed on your machine).

Attempt to follow the YouTube video that I posted above while recording your effort with Screencast.

Provide the link to the video of your effort and File>Export and then Attach your *.f3d file here.

If you follow these simple steps - you will master Fusion in 30 minutes...  ...or so.

If anyone ends up here still looking for an answer, you can use the Sketch Dimension tool on a Center Diameter Circle by selecting the circumference of the circle twice.

Just to clarify how confusing it can be to EDIT a circle already created.

 1.  You create a circe... but do not enter a value before left clicking - no dimension will be available after the circle has been created (even with "show Dimensions" turned on in options.

 2.  When you first create the circle - add a numeric value immediately & then hit enter - this way you have a dimension that's editable.

3. If so some reason yo did not add the numeric value when initially creating your circle you will need to right click on the circle and go "SKETCH DIMENSION "  then left click & you're able to edit the cicle's original dimension.

Here's a video showing the issue... Hope this helps

note: It's a silly feature that should be rectified so the circle's dimension is available immediatly upon creation. No wonder it's so confusing.    AUTODESK take note -  add the dimension immediately upon creation so one only has to right click the dimension to edit it.

If anyone STILL has trouble despite the helpful tips, you may need to delete the constraint (△ symbol). You can see how in this video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/o2U53ZnUpU0
