How can I flip/reverse a body/compoment?

I imported a component that was a stp, but I need it to be reversed.  I tried doing a negative scale, but that didn't work.  Any ideas?

Maybe if you could do negative scaling, it would be an easy addition to make? I'm not a programmer but that was the first thing I tried to do and was like, huh, doesn't work, weird..

hi,

Scaling has nothing to do with positive or negative, but with multiplication by factors.
Factor >1 = larger
Factor < 1 = smaller

Not only does this work in other 3D applications, e.g. Blender, it also works in Fusion 360, albeit a bit convoluted.

 

Create a user parameter called, for example "scaling_factor". It must be unitless. Give it a value of 1.

Create your 3D body.

Use the scale tool in with non-uniform scaling and the axis you want to scale negatively, replace the value of "1" with the user parameter.

After completing the scaling operation, change the user parameter to "-1".

 

See attached example.

Clever. I like this solution as I've used this negative scaling technique in Sketchup before. Unsure what clear advantage it has over the "Mirror" feature (other than not having "duplicate" objects in the project that Mirror produces.)

I am not sure it does have an advantage. You can simply "remove" (not delete) the duplicate. If scaling by -1 would work without the user parameter workaround you'd save one feature in the timeline.

As is, I think it's more work.

An operation where a parameter "seems" to do, what you want, but leads to a change of the font color in the feature menu and on the other hand is not possible in the menu itself, I would not call a solution at all.

Whether or not you consider the workflow I posted as a solution is pretty irrelevant to most.

It only shows your lack of imagination to exclude number including and past  "-1" in your range of pretty basic math.

It is sad enough that that lack of imagination also extended to the folks who implement the Scale command.

After mirroring the component try using "Save Copy As" to create an external file.

It isn't up to the coders what to implement. It's only up to them and only to a degree how to implement it.

It isn't necessarily even up to the PMs at Autodesk to decide what to implement.

 

Users like us aren't the only ones who ask for the implementation of certain features. Many people internal to Autodesk want certain features prioritized for certain reasons, and as such, sometimes seemingly simple requests such as this take longer—a lot longer!

I too was hoping to find a solution to this problem; I need to create a complimentary component (B) that will fit with another component (A). Mirroring would not help as the components have alternating features which cannot be accomplished by mirroring (think of fingers fitting together when your hands are clasped). The work around for me was to go back in the timeline and copy the original superimposed sketch before the component was extruded, then paste and make minor changes, and extrude the second components with the correct alternating features. Not sure if this method was mentioned already, hope this helps.
