Help with FBX Export

Anonymous
Not applicable

I'm attempting to export an FBX file of a component I've created in Fusion 360 through MyHub. I am able to generate an FBX file and download it. When I go to open the file in FBX Review (An Autodesk free viewer) to make sure the FBX file is OK, the FBX Review Application shows that the file contatians zero polygons and nothing is displayed.

More interestingly, when I attempt to import the FBX file in other 3rd party applications, those applications quickly consume all available memory and lock up my machine, or the program fails to import with an error.

I have tried exporting FBX with varying model complexity from simple cubes to more complex components that include textures. None of them yield any results. The FBX file itself seems to contain data as it has a significant size on disk.

Any thoughts?

This appears to be a known issue (report reference number UP-11231).  The FBX viewer appears to only show mesh bodies (no nurbs bodies). It's reported to show differently in other applications like Maya. Is there another application you are looking to work with?

Thanks,

Hi,

(Still xapete here, just logged in with my other account)

We're looking to export FBX meshes from Fusion to Unreal Engine 4 for realtime visualzation and interactivity. But from what you're saying it doesn't seem like Fusion currently supports meshes for FBX. Is there an option to generate meshes during FBX export? Or, within Fusion, convert bodies in to meshes? I've also tried using Blender 2.75 to see if I can pull in the FBX but no luck there - and likely because there is no mesh information in that FBX file.

There is a convert command that will allow you to convert a BREP Solid to a Mesh. Mesh bodies could then be exported as an OBJ, or they may work in the FBX file format.

Please note that the convert command is only available while in a Direct Modeling (DM) environments, Base Feature or Sculpt. You can also turn off the Design History at the bottom to enable the option.

Check out this screencast for a quick demo.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have questions.

Cheers,

Hi Nathan,

The procedure you described worked for me and I was able to convert BREP to mesh and export a body as an object and use it successfuly in Unreal 4.

Though, in doing so, I did have to remove the timeline and I wasn't able to export multiple bodies with their relative positions to one file which would save considerable time afterwards.

It would be nice in the future to have an FBX export dialog box that allows you to export multiple bodies with other body scene information and automatic conversion to mesh if desired. But I can post that in Idea Station.

Thanks for your help!

I am trying to find a way to copy a Fusion 360 assembly with joints into Blender or perhaps Maya, from a Fusion 360 assembly with a bunch of sub and sub-sub components. I suppose I am kind of looking for the same kind of workflow you are, but with a different target in mind. I would like to skip bringing in the subcomponents one by one also. I posted to idea station:

Batch converter for Importing Fusion 360 Assembly, with Joints, into Blender
