Copy and Paste Bodies Between Designs

In one project I currently have two designs (files). I want to combine these two files into one, so I can combine some of the bodies etc. Is there a way to copy and paste things from one place into another?

Yes. There are a few ways.

Insert and break link:

The first thing I would try is inserting one design into the other and then right click on the linked file and use Break Link.

Copy and Paste:

Within a single project components can be copied between designs. In this case, you need to right click on the top of the browser (the root), and pick Create Components from Bodies. But if your sketches and bodies start at the root, they will not paste into the other design.

To make this work you must follow the best practices for assembly modeling. Specifically, you must have from the start used this workflow:

1. Create Component (RMB on the root of the browser)

2. Activate component. See below.

3. Create all sketches and bodies inside this component.

Otherwise, what happens is Fusion will deliver pasted components without parametric information. You can still add features or modify them, but the sketches will be gone.

The other benefit, aside from Copy and Paste of parametric components, is that this kind of workflow allows you to filter the timeline for each component when you want to work on it. See below.

How do you insert the body in fusion 360? Sorry to hi-jack your post

Can you be more specific?

  • Do you want to copy a body within a single design?
  • Do you want to copy a body between designs?
  • Does Copy and Paste fail for you?

Please let us know what we can do to help.

Thanks,

Hijacking an old, inactive post is OK. Not being specific is not 😉

I found this thread searching for an answer.  I'm not sure if this is something to be remedied in the future or if it's been solved.  That is how does one copy a body from one design document into another.  I made a vid of making the attempt but while apparently one can copy bodies, there' no apparent way to paste them outside the original document.

Or is there?

Create a component from the body.

Export the component to the data panel with "save copy as"

Open the design you wantthe body to be inserted into.

Select the proviously exported component from the data pabel with a left-click. then right-click on it and select insert into new design.

Break the link and then you cna copy past the body where you need it.

Just make sure you first understand the difference between bodies and components in Fusion 360.

Can you do that with sketches.

So you can redraw a model if needed to tidy things up?

Yeah Perer! You know what I'm on about!

Yes. The process is slightly different. While there is a menu option "Create components from bodies" (or so) that does not exist for a sketch.

However, you might be able to create an empty component and drag the sketch into it.

If you've projected elements from that sketch into other sketches that might not work.

I managed everything up until I had to break the link.  I don't understand nor did I find any particular command to achieve that.  I noticed that suppress features broke things sorta, So I stepped back, made a copy of the inserted component, then suppressed features on the original.  After that seemed to be gone I tried to paste in the copy I made and I managed to crash the application.

So .... how does one break the link?

Update:  Found it.  Sometimes I miss things as the type is so small, and other times things don't always show up where I last saw them - (or thought I saw them)

I want to copy a sketch in one project and paste it into a new project.  This seems to be impossible or require some special knowledge to execute a task that's so utterly fundamental.   When I try to make a sc of my efforts the red frame obscures the menu bar and there's no copy or paste option availble with the right click menu.  Would you perhaps make a short vid of how this is done?   I think it may be a popular item.

Thanks Phil.  I've a better understanding of the component function now.
