Batch converter for Importing Fusion 360 Assembly, with Joints, into Blender

Batch converter for Importing Fusion 360 Assembly, with Joints, into Blender

I am looking for an add in that can Batch Convert a Fusion assembly, complete with joints, into Blender. I know this is technically complex, but maybe someone with experience in both APIs could suggest an approach?

Essentially, I know I can import STLs into Blender, and rig them with joints. If Fusion add-in could automatically do this, at least to replace the tedium of the finer details with some intelligent conversion, then this would be a big step in improving the value proposition of using Fusion 360 for complex mechanical simulations with many joints, like mechanisms machines, gearboxes, etc. In my case, I am trying to simulate the motion of a cable chain assembly, which has many joints which (understandably) bogs fustion down. In blender, handling this kind of animation will be a breeze. So I envision using Fusion to model the parts with the precision of a solid modeller, and then use Blender, (which is free yet very sophisticated) for the animation.

Maybe there is a common denominator between joints in the two apps that can be leveraged to make such a batch exporter possible. Early versions would not have to do all the joint types, perhaps rigid, rotational, cylindrical, and slider for starters and a proof of concept. Blender is so sophisticated with joints, I imagine it shoud handle the basic Fusion joints with ease, so long as there is a clever way to map one to the other and move the data across. I wonder also if Joint Origins could be translated, maybe that could serve as a shortcut compromise for early atempts.

To import or export, that is the question!

An exporter in Fusion 360, or A360 cloud translation, or

An importer inside Blender, or their cloud translation (if it exists).

Which is the better approach, I don't know.

Anyone have experience in both APi?s Thoughts?

I overlooked the fbx file type, does that somehow hold promise for exporting joints into Blender? I know it's for motion simulation, but I don't know much about what it can do or how it's commonly used. I did try to convert my Fusion 360 assembly into an fbx file in A360, but it sent me an error email. (I don't know anything about working with fbx files or how they are used.) From looking at wikipedia, I assume it contains the motion dots from motion actors or a moving object, recorded into a timeline? I am guessing the joints themselves are not included in the file; it's basically just a recording of the motion of a bunch of dots? Or does it contain the "skeleton" or bones, or joints as well? I need to look at this more and find out. Any possible workflow suggestions (existing tutorial videos included) on getting my assembly's joints into Blender would be helpful. In the meantime, I am google searching it to death, heh.

So far, I found this page;

and this one with gurus discussing fbx importing into Blender.

Heh, I need to see how one would even make an fbx in Fusion in the first place. Back to learning mode...
