I am new netfabb user and am working on the Hip implant file which is in stl format. If i want to do FEA on it, what should be the approach?

Can I directly do fea on stl file like other implicit software can do? Or do i need to convert it in to Brep? Or T Spline?

Thanks in advance.

Hello @lars_christensen

Can you please connect me to any technical support as i have not got any reply to my previous question.

I do referred to the guidelines available on forum and tutorials on the website. but facing some problems as our product is different than other case studies available there.

Doing fea on stls is easy if it is an engineering product. But as our is the implant (Hip, and patient specific ortho products), it has very complex topology and it gets very tedious to handle such stls, convert it into stp, & do fea on it with the available workflow on website. It takes more than two day for doing one FEA.

Problems I am facing:

1) Mesh of implants has large number of facets. If i reduce it to convert into stp, the self intersecting triangles are created creating problem in FEA.

2) After conversion in to stp, it takes TOOO LONGG time to apply boundary conditions and software starts lagging.

I have 32 Gb ram with quad core processor.

3) It takes more than two days to do one FEA of implant which is very long. On other softwares it takes max 3 hours on the same system.

If  you can connect me to any FEA application person for stl files. it would be great.

Thanks

Regards

Pravin

@rushabhthakkar_910

Thanks for sharing this link https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/running-fea-simulation-from-stl-file/td-p/... to me. I was facing same problem what is mentioned there.

What i understand from what you shared is, FEA of implants stl files with purely Fusion 360 is not possible. We have to convert the stl into solid from another software and then try FEA in fusion 360.

Thank you Rushabh Thakkar.

The problem with STL is that its triangular non-thick faces. To use stress analysis, you need a solid body. You can convert STL to solids within Fusion, but there is a limit to the faucet count.

Feel free to email me if you want to chat more about possible next steps. lars.christensen@autodesk.com

Best,

Lars

Yes Sir... I have used .stl files before... And if the facet count is more, I have to reduce it so that it can be converted to a Solid Body... another thing is if still the facet count is more, and you have a big design which has copies of it, It hangs Fusion and keeps exiting...

Thanks and Regards,

Rushabh Thakkar.
