extrude text in hollow form and move a sketch issues

2ND FLIP.pngi'm trying to extrude the text. 2 issues:

  1. I can't get it to extrude or cut
  2. i want to have a mirror image of one sketch to cut the other side

there will be an LED in the bottom that will turn on when you flip it over.  I want it to shine through the cuts.

Can you attach a larger image, or if possible, the actual file? It is difficult to see what is going on.

I'll try, but I'm not great at this!

Note: This reply was sent from my product account since I was signed into Fusion while making this part. There isn't two different people replying to you here. hahaa

That's OK Mary. We'll get it figured out.

Here is a short video on how to share a file.

http://autode.sk/1F33p5T

I created a test file just to see what the workflow is like in Fusion. It turns out it isn't great for this particular operation. Normally there is a command called emboss and it doesn't appear that Fusion has this command yet. The emboss command would wrap the sketch to the face and then cut the letters out. I think I have an alternate method that you can use though. If you can share the file, I'll try to figure out why your text can't be cut.

Are you actually going to build this part? What process will you use if you are?

Thanks,

I would love to do that, but everytime I try Fusion freezes!  I'll work on the prob. and get back to you.

I'm going to print it in plastic, then we'll teach the neighbor kid to solder the battery, sensor, and LCD and glue that to the bottom.  You just flip it to turnit on!

OK, sounds good.

One other thing you mentioned was wanting to be able to mirror this. If you mirror your text to the other side, it will be backwards. Instead you will want to do a circular pattern. That will duplicate what you have but on the opposite side and the text won't be backwards.

I'm having trouble! But if you will send me your email I can just add you to the project. I finally got it to extrude the peace but still can't move love, I'm sure there is a country song in there somewhere!

I didn't get an email, sorry, how does the direct messaging work?

Every time i try to share a file in fusion, fusion locks up and have to close it in task manager.  I've tried to look for updates and restarted the computer just to be safe.  I'm on Win 7, 64b.  Any ideas?

Hello Mary and Kevin,

Tried this with a similar font, converted text to outlines and exported as SVG (in a 2D drawing software), then imported this SVG in Fusion 360.

The SVG import however is very "slow" in Fusion 360, the text has around 400 points (not sure if this is too much or not), but it is near impossible to move or scale this text, Fusion 360 bogs down with significant lag and it takes a lot of time to compute.

Maybe there are ways to tweak this SVG so it handles better in Fusion 360.

Perhaps a "simple" font will work faster.

Finally I got approximately something like the picture Mary posted.

There must be several (probably better) manners to do this but feel free to check and use the file.

Best regards to both of you,

Ludo

Hi Mary. Have a look. I was able to cut the word love and then I did a circular pattern on it.

I have to run out to a few appointments for a bit, but have a look and see if that was what you were after.

Well, that is the confusing part. I just used the extrude command to cut the word out using the through all option for the distance. It did it right away. Which is what I assume you did but the extrusion failed. After I got the cut made, I created a circular pattern (using the features option in that command) to add a second instance of the words on the backside.

Did you get an error message when you tried to extrude cut the text?

I have no idea of why the extrude was not initially working. I have to assume that somehow it was my selection error. I am self-taught in this whole design process. I am a real hackbut I tend to get things accomplished.

I am particularly interested in how you projected the text onto the C. It makes sense why it worked I just don't know how you did it. I should probably go back into your design feature to check that out more.

By the way we made the flip light and it is absolutely fantastic. It is the perfect little nightlight. And it's cute to boot!

The reason I Learned Fusion was to design my own wheelchair. I am an outdoor person to the core and these wheelchairs just don't get it. It seems as if you are a designer and may know someone who could help me bring this to fruition and perhaps even market. The chair will fully recline, fully stand, fit in standard disabled access and will get me into those mountains! Let me know what direction I should take if you have a clue. Because I certainly have zero!

I could not figure out how the C curve worked, but then I started on a new project and figured it out. I made a replacement water jug lid. And projected small circles around the outer face to help with grip. So you inadvertently solved a problem I never knew I had.

Thanks again Mary
