Extract a spline from an edge?

Hi there.

I have an object which I'd like to make a copy/extract a duplicate of one of its edges and turn it into a spline. Which I can then move and then join it together with the object/surface using loft. Is there a way to do this? I feel like there is but I'm missing it somewhere.

Any advice much appreciated.

Hi @jimmy.laww

You should be able to achieve this using Project command.

Can you please share the dataset from which you would like to extract a spline from an edge?

Please share the model.

I personally don't use curves projected from 3D geometry in surfacing projects, but  whether or not that's a problem depends on the specific geometry.

Excellent, that's put me on the right track and I figured it out. Thanks! I've attached my file with the solution.

@TrippyLightingI wanted to create a spline this way so that the beginning and end points of the resulting curve would be precisely placed on the 'X' plane needed for the model to be closed. Say if I didn't want to do it this way and just create a curve manually. How would I ensure that the beginning and ends points are placed where I need them? I think this lack of knowledge of Fusion360 is letting me down. How to precisely place points/object etc, relative to other objects. Hopefully this image explains what I mean? Do you have any pointers how this is handled in Fusion?

Start a sketch on the plane you want, then use the intersect tool and select the purple edges.

Accepted solution

Hi @jimmy.laww

As mentioned earlier, for this case use Sketch Project command.

The sketch/Intersect tools as others have mentioned is the right approach to get these points into that sketch.

I am wondering, however, what it is you are trying to create.

Great, thanks everyone!

@matthewrjacobs  Ahh.. brilliant, thank you!

@TrippyLighting  I'm just creating complex objects and thinking up ways to alter them. It helps me learn new programs and concepts.
