Considering how much time I have put into getting it to run with wine I have already been doing this. I would agree to an NDA.

Now to some simple math, they will need quite a few Linux guys for the programing at 60K or there about each plus, (for the different teams that work on fusion) their office requirements and sundries straight of the bat.

If a person could prove at a minimum 10,000 to 50,000 Linux users would pay that would sway them.

You don't duplicate your entire development staff to support one more platform. You don't have two completely different development teams for Mac and Win now do you? At most you need to tack on a few tester positions and a little training time for a few of the current staff.

It's amazing some start-up hasn't figured out how easy and how profitable this would be.

What's wrong with hiring on some Linux guys for the different teams that work on fusion, (there are different teams that work on different areas of all ADSK products).

Getting in specialists is good practise, as it helps keep dev going at a good pace If you do not know how to repair or do something and do not want to lose time learning or fixing it what do you do.

Here's the thing. There are commercial versions of Linux (it powers most of the Internet). There are privacy hardware versions like Purism Librem laptops and phones. Convergence is about using the best solution. Just make a snap that will run on Mac, Windows and Linux. Linux is a small user base BECAUSE you don't support it. The number of people who USE Linux is huge... why does WSL exist? Python? Raspberry Pi? Arduino?

IF you supported Linux as a browser app, my subscription would still be real money. The browser app would work (presumably) on all hardware... the next generation of customers are more security and environmentally aware.

Why doesn't somebody jump all over this?

Seems like an incredible opportunity that has not been previously recognized.

You don't need to buy W10. You can still upgrade for free.

Not all computers come with windows

Most things that matter are about personal identity. Some people identify as Mac users, others Windows or Linux. As a software company it is more profitable to enable customers to use your software without challenging their identity

It is amazing that the major CAD vendors have not figured this out.

A real opportunity for a new player in this field...

"Hmmm. 1.5 billion Apple users, 1.5 billion Windows users,  32 million Linux users. Which market would you spend your resources on?"

This is simply a lie. You don't have even close of those users on MacOS.

There are roughly half of the users of linux when compared to MacoSX. Plus, android IS linux. Chrome OS, IS linux.

And if you can have a simpler OS, better looking, better performing, and safer (and yes, linux is all those things, all benchmarks of apps are better - even with WINE sometimes it runs faster on linux than windows). So stop saying lies because you are from a church of Apple of Windows. You don't want it, you don't have to use it.

I don't go to MACOSx posts saying, stop supporting this, it's a limited and repressive OS do I?  That would be ridiculous correct? That's you in these posts.

😀 😀 😀  Where did you get the idea I like Apple products?  It's actually quite the opposite.  If you don't like the numbers, do a Google (another company not very well liked) search for number of users for each of the OSes.

Abuse and slander will get you what, If you can prove the numbers they will do it, it is the ROI if it takes 10 or more years to get that return why on earth would you do it.

I code a lot for my work. I mainly use fusion360 for 3d printing devices for work. Windows is horrible for coding and developing (right now it's only good for games because they are only done for windows). MacOS is overpriced and I don't like to pay a 200% premium because of following people.

So, because your preferences I shouldn't ask a company to develop software to an OS that is superior in any way (and quite honestly, it's easier to program)?

From Wikipedia (and it's reference). We are talking about developers right? Not people that will never develop something and use Fusion 360.

"

The 2019 Stack Overflow developer survey provides no detail about particular versions of Windows. The desktop operating system share among those identifying as Professional Developers was:

  • Windows: 45.3%
  • MacOS: 29.2%
  • Linux: 25.3%
  • BSD/Unix: 0.1%"

https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2019#technology-_-developers-primary-operating-systems

But hey. Have fun.

By the way, if a company knows how to program...the application will run flawlessly in any OS, as long as the required HW/library compatibilities are there. And this..is a fact.

Examples:

All videogames on Steam that now run natively,

google chrome,

firefox ,

Skype.

If you like to have a slow system, that requires 10 antiviruses, weird firewalls, slow filesystem, doesn't use the graphics card properly to its full potential, only windows manager option, not even "always on top" for the windows you see, it's up to use to use it. I'm glad you do also pay for it.

I don't so, again, wouldn't it be ridiculous that I'd go to a forum post about windows support and start bashing on it? Yes, it would be. Just like you are being here, childish about requests from multiple users that are clients. If it's like a religion to you, keep it to yourself. A bit of democracy respect is what you need.

Goodness guys. Can't everyone be a little bit more respectful? For those who think Fusion should be available for Linux post it to the IdeaStation. There's already a post for Linux in the IdeaStation so go vote for it. Or like @TheCADWhisperer mentioned jump on this opportunity yourself. You could easily be looking at making profit. But there is no need for everyone to be bad mouthing one another. This is a community where everyone works together, not disagrees and acts childish towards one another. Post your ideas to the IdeaStation and stop mouthing one another.

@joao_mamede The dev survey is the wrong survey to go by it is the CAD/CAM users survey that matters it does not matter about how many developers there are at all, it is cad/cam users that matter.

With some, they have many cad/cam programs so a lot of people are stuck with windows so they can not move to Linux at all.

I run Windows and Apple I was going to run one of my CNC machines on Linux but Linux users stuffed that up with abuse over asking a question I could not find the answer for(this is one of the issues the Linux community needs to address).

There is no way around it a lot of people will move there cad/cam program to Linux but that's the people already using Linux, anyone with something between there ears knows roughly what the differences between the os's are.

How come anyone thought there could be a market for CAD programs?

I run Fusion on linux all the time and it works flawlessly. Just use a vm! A KVM guest with gpu passthrough performs just as fast as bare metal would. For quick stuff I use RDP which is fast enough, for longer sessions there's nvidia gamestream + moonlight client which works a treat.

I'd like a native version for sure but realistically that's not going to happen so this is the best solution as of now.

@pietro.baricco can you elaborate on that setup?

It would help many people in the maker community if this can be replicated easily enough!
