Cylinder Layers

I created a cylinder with many layers. I am trying to sketch a quadrilateral at the top, and extrude it to the bottom.

However, when I get out of sketch mode, the layers disappear. Any ideas why?

Thanks

no idea what changing the indicated point by 5 degrees toward the z axis would mean in this context.  do you mean make the diameter of the top smaller?  Anyway, clearly you're doing something different from me if what I did works and you're attempts don't.  hard to say what that would be with the given information.

maybe this will help.  attached is a video of me nodding around with various aspects  of the model.  perhaps this will spark further questions or understanding.

note, first thing I did was simplify the profile used to create the outside of the surface from the spline to an simple arc. (I just made the arc construction geometry.  this makes it easy to get back to the original).  I did this manly because computing between changes will be MUCH faster with the simple arc.  get the general shape you want here, then add the more complicated geometry back in.
