Component falling apart when assembling.

Hi all,

I have this weird issue with an imported component falling apart when assembling it to another imported component.

Already tried RIGID GROUP in the source documents, and in the work document, but to no avail, although this keeps some parts where they need to be.

I need to assemble the hotend (metal thing) to the carriage (green thing) with one of those visible joints.

It works the other way around, assembling the green thing to the metal thing, but when I then try to move the assembly to its correct position, the metal one falls apart again...

Any idea what I am doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance!

Also tried as-build-joint both in source document and work document of the metal thing, but not solved yet.

Do I really need to assemble the whole source document with joints to be able to move it in the work document? Or am I missing something here...

OK I give up. Either I am too stupid, ot there is a bug in the Rigid Group command. If I tell Fusion this is a RIGID GROUP, it should not let it fall apart while I assemble it to another parth using a joint right?

Hi @Anonymous.  Can you possibly share your design?  It's a little hard to figure out what is going on with just static screen shots.  Rigid group should, definitely keep your components "together" (meaning their relative positions to each other should be maintained).  When you say "falling apart", what actually are you seeing?  Do the components move at the time the Rigid Group is created, or it is that the Rigid Group does not stay together after creation, when one of the group is moved?

I'd be more than happy to take a look at your design if you'd share it here.

Hi,

while creating the rigid group, everython seems fine. The falling apart happens when I assemble the grouped component to another component using a rigid joint. What happens then, is that the main body of the component gets attached, but the rest of the parts just stay where they were...

I'm glad you mention that a rigid group should remain rigid 🙂 thought I was losing my mind...

I tried sharing but it seems there is something wrong with the sharing dialog??? (see attachment)

It seems possible to share another way too,  but that asks me for an email adress of the person I want to share with :s

Thanks,

M

I'm not sure what is going on with the share dialog.  Try also clicking in the "Allow item to be downloaded" box.  For me, that seemed to "kick" the dialog into putting the link in the dialog.  If that doesn't work, you can invite me to the project at jeff.strater@autodesk.com.

Hopefully I can figure out what is going on, but there is always the chance that you have found a bug in Fusion, in which case, we really appreciate the help.

The link sharing dialog is dead except for turning on and off the first option... seems like there's a bug there as well. This thread also mentions it: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-validate-document/enabling-sharing-does-not-generate-public-lin...

I've shared the link with your email address, thanks for trying to help me out here. If it's a bug, please let me know what I can do to help to identify the problem!

Regards,

M

OK, I have the design.  Thanks for inviting me.  Now, can you describe what design you are working in, and what you are trying to do there?  From the screen images it looks like you are working in either "Chimera Assembled", or "Chimera Unmodified".  A screencast would be great, or some description of which components you are selecting for the rigid group, etc.

thanks!

Jeff

Good :).

My project is 'Main' and 'Chimera Assembled' is the one I am trying to rigid-join the bottom screw hole on the back, to the bottom center screw hole joint on the green X-carridge component

I tried making 'Chimera Assembled' a Rigid Group in both it's own project, as in the linked version, both do not work.

If that's not enough information, I could try doing a screencast, but not sure how to do this...

Thanks!

I think I get your workflow.  I do encourage you to download Screencast (from here).  It's a great way to share videos of Fusion, etc.  It is really helpful to explain questions (and answers).

Anyway, I suspect I understand where you are getting tripped up.  Some of this is a basic usability problem in Fusion.  After playing with your design, I realize that it is not as simple to create rigid groups as I had hoped it was.  I think there is a relatively easy fix for that.

I recorded this video of how I would go about this, and some of the problems that I suspect are tripping you up.

Hopefully it helps clear up some of the mystery.   Let me know if you have more questions.

Jeff

Hi,

thank you so much for taking your time to solve this! The video was very imformative, clear and spot on. I understand why the preview of assembly only shows a part of the process, but the slection process for making a rigid group, might still need some refinement. It does work though, and I'll keep this in mind the next time I have something not selecting like I was hoping to.

Have a good day, and thanks again 🙂
