Cannot select a patterned edge

Hi all,

I created a simple design, based on a rectangular pattern of a semicircle which was then mirrored and extruded. The body then had a countersunk hole added, which was then patterned across the body.

I'm running into two problems when I try to add a fillet or chamfer to the outside edge. The first problem is that I can't get either a fillet or a chamfer to work, and I'm not sure what I'm missing to make it work. I get either of the following two errors:

"the fillet could not be created at the requested size"

"attempt to change record marked as deleted"

I've tried different sizes of fillets, and different edge selections, rule fillet vs regular fillet, but nothing seems to make a difference. I'm sure it's something simple - I just can't figure it out.

The second issue is that while troubleshooting this, I tried manually selecting each of the edge vertices individually. On one side of the body, this was no problem. But on the other side, there is an edge right in the center (the arc linking two hole segments in the original sketch) that is not selectable. It's only that one edge.

Since that edge was created from a pattern operation in the sketch and then extruded, I don't understand why it is behaving differently from the rest of the model - or how to fix whatever problem it has.

If anyone can advise, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

Lee

You needed to add a small fillet on each edge between each knuckle, then the full edge is easy.  I have a 0.005" on these edges and the full radius is 0.03125".  Model is attached.

Hi Jhackney,

That's exactly what I'm going for, thanks for showing it. Unfortunately, there are two of those edges between the knuckles that won't allow me to fillet them. They give me the same "attempt to change record as deleted" error. I'm not sure why you were able to do that, but I'm not?

Please note the 0.005 in fillets in my model.  These connect the edges and allow the fillets to be applied.

Hi,

Yes - that's what I'm trying to do. If you take a look at the screenshot, you'll see I was able to apply those 0.005 fillets to all but two of those intervening edges. The remaining two edges give me that error when I try to fillet them.

ah! I looked again at your model, and scrolled back through the timeline. I see what you mean now - the preliminary fillets are on the sides of the plate, not on the edges as I first thought.

Thank you!

Actually, no... I'm still getting the same issue - I can't perform a 0.005" fillet operation on either side of the 11th hole. This is true for both edges adjacent to the knuckle on one side of the plate only - the other side of the plate fillets just fine.  I've attached a screenshot and my .f3D file with the fillets here.

This seems very weird...

Very weird.... I saved and closed the file, closed f360, and then reopened it. It reopened not only with the missing fillets completed, but a fillet all around the edge of the part (which was my end goal, but I definitely did not do yet). In addition, there were 7 additional fillet operations in the timeline, all of which had errors and said were invalidated due to missing references.

I am now very confused by this. I'm new to fusion 360, and CAD in general, but this seems like strange behaviour for any software....

I would dramatically simplify Sketch1 (Pattern Features rather than sketch elements).

I would use dimensions in my sketches.

I would fully define my sketches (no blue curves, no white dots).

I would not ignore yellow highlighted unresolved issues in the Timeline.

Given that there are no dimensions on your Sketch1 - I do not understand the true Design Intent?

I would expect to see something like this.

I can't help to wonder if the Design Intent was for those two arcs to be Tangent to the circles?

I do not have an real reason you cannot select the edges.  One guess is that you do not have all your selection filters, I mentioned this at the end of the Screencast.  I cleaned up your timeline a bit, removing some unnecessary features but for me, it is a time consuming task, but all the fillets work fine. You do need to consider learning about sketch constraints and dimensioning at some point as you first, and only, sketch is undefined.  This will get in your way of learning Fusion 360 so start now learning it.  Model is attached.

Thank you both very much - I was able to recreate CADWhisperer's workflow, and get to a point I can move forward with the project.

You both mentioned sketch dimensioning and constraints, which I understand is very important. When I started the sketch, I dimensioned all the various sketch geometries as I drew them. But, I subsequently deleted the lower half of the sketch and mirrored the top half, which I think removed all the dimensions. After that, I had played (unsuccessfully) with constraints to try to get the sketch fully constrained, but failed to realize that the dimensions were now absent. I think that was the root of the problem in the sketch. I can now see that mirroring the sketch was completely unnecessary, and the sketch shown by the CADwhisperer is a much cleaner way.

JHackney, thank you so much for the screencast - it was very helpful. My selection filters are all checked, and I was able to select all of the other similar edges to bridge those gaps - it was only those two that were problematic. I don't have a good explanation for it, but as noted I was able to use the other workflow to work around it.

Thanks again to you both - the learning curve is steep, but I'm enjoying it!
