cannot derive dimension

Ok . After three hours of searching forums I cannot find out why I cannot make a dimension a function of another in a sketch. If I start a new file and make sketch of a rectangle I can dimension, i.e., the horizontal side. When I dimension the vertical I can select the horizontal dimension and divide by 2. the vertical dimension is displayed as: d1/2. Life is good.

I open an existing file and create the same sketch. I repeat the process from above. When I select the horizontal dimension it is not accepted into the vertical dimension value box. I cannot make the vertical dimension a function of the horizontal dimension.

Why?

It's not reproducible on my machine.  Attach both your files to the thread for analysis (From the File menu:Export|Archive file *.f3d.)

That helps. Is this public knowledge? How would I search for this?

Thank you.
