Yet again, Fusion 360 is stalling doing something.

Pressing the ESC key isn't doing anything. Sometimes we have to wait endlessly and because Fusion 360 is rather slow in general even if it finally completes the action we've still often waited several minutes.

Pull the arrow a little to quickly when filleting the "right" geometry. Fusion 360 takes it's sweet time.

Mistype something you wait again. Tough!

3 Years ago the explanation was given than this is complicated. OK. Granted. This was three years ago.

By this time it is totally unacceptable that this still happens and is not fixed!.

On Windows OS version of Fusion the sequence Ctrl+Alt+Del works.  Smiley Wink

Yes, I can do that similarly on the Mac as well. I should not have to do that however!

Hello @TrippyLighting

Just wanted to confirm that the request is about aborting the function/command if Esc button is clicked in the Sketch?

Thank you,

Best Regards

@rohit.bapat yes, that exactly is what I'd want.

Abort an operation when the ESC key is pressed.

So, practically, we users are often in this position of asking something of Fusion, with the program choking in response.   How long should we leave the computer in hopes of recovering the work that immediately proceeded the choke? 5 minutes?  10?   20?   That depends on how critical we deem the trapped work.   It may be the hang up will be resolved in a minute or 2- or not -and we develop a sense with use which will be the case,  so a method of bitch slapping Fusion into aborting the task would be a great help.

I had to come back to this thread, unfortunately. I frequently run into this. Still.

Even though I have a pretty good feeling about when I run into this trouble, occasionally I get a rude morning awakening that Fusion 360 can fail even with seemingly simple geometry.

But this time I have a file I can share. I tried to help the user in this thread with the Celtic knot pattern and when I initially tried it with just a part of this pattern it worked. The idea is that I determine the symmetries in the pattern of which there are many, an then create a sketch with only the necessary geometry and pattern that. All driven by user parameters. So far so good.

Then the idea was to extrude the sketch into surfaces in Patch mode and thicken them symmetrically to 1mm (2mm overall width) and apply a chamfer. Initially with fewer sketch elements it worked. The preview shows that it works but now it has been running for 15 minutes at close to 100% utilization 10 minutes of that with the fans blowing full steam (high spec 2017 MacBook Pro ). It's still trying to complete the operation.

The sketch geometry's lines and tangent arcs. I am not trying to thicken a complex lofted surface or shell a complicated body. This should be easy peasy, but apparently it isn't.

And another one. Completely unrelated. Completely new file. A canvas of a logo and Im am tracing it. in a single sketch.

I accidentally closed the spline and want to delete it. I select the spline and press the delete key, or so I think.

10 minutes later Fusion 360 still has the fans spinning full blast and does not return.

Whatever I might have pressed, there is nothing in this design that should stop Fusion 360 responding unable to take any user input and me having to force quit it.

Screen Shot 2018-11-13 at 4.54.49 PM.png

But unfortunately I cannot reproduce this.

However, Fusion 360 did save the "untitled" file but in the process of "saving" my work sort off killed the canvas.

The background is still there, but the letters/logo are gone 😕

I dare ask for a Pull- 15 minutes later, still waiting for Fusion to unlock.   This happens all the time.   It's just absurd.   An escape function?   I very much would like to.

@mavigogun  So now, many months down the road well on your way to master Fusion 360 I assume you've become familiar with the UI. You know what is where and how to get to the tools you need. You know what works and what isn't and have memorized numerous workarounds.

How important do you still think UI considerations are compared to this ?

For me, UI issues have moved completely into the background. While there is room for improvement it's good enough as is. I've looked at the new "theme" a time or two. It lacks certain functionality the old one has and suffers from a few blatant oversights when it was released. I don't need it. At all!

The SBOD problems however have been very consistent in Fusion 360 and I find it very frustrating.

The UI is like the paint job on a bicycle. You'll get used to it.

This problem is like the frame is too small. It will make you inefficient and uncomfortable every time you get on the bike and ultimately you'll just get a new bike.

The priority stratagem remains at odds with my continued use. The value and liabilities present are continually contesting, with sunk cost too often the final arbiter of my path. That ain't the way it should be. I've urged, time and again, for elevating core functionality and reliability over new feature development. The UI goals do not seem to serve any compelling interest of mine.

It has been strongly suggested to me the various disciplines laboring to build Fusion are adequately resourced, that the pace of progress is not limited by the number of people tasked to to any particular discipline, and that, to an actionable degree, the diverse priories guiding development are not in practical contest. Ultimately, performance qualifies these characterizations. My impression- what we are party to is akin to the early development of surgery, or colonization: outcome and needs of users inform progress, but, individually, some are expected to not survive the transition from here to there. This is testified to by the lack of user manual- a document for some future users, in which we will likely feature as a grateful footnote, thank you for your sacrifices. Of course, the truth is something other- designers are not siloed away in an ivory tower, focused purely on their own esoteric concerns or industry mechanics; they are more akin to well intended community members who join law enforcement to help police their own neighborhoods, but have lost touch with the streets, connections obscured by process, political concerns, and imposed priorities.

I don't need <new UI developments>. At all!

I  reckon, if the no-contesting-priories narrative is, to a degree, wishful, your feedback should be alarming.    For my part, the October subscription condition inducement was declined for a lack of confidence, unable to reconcile the price paid in wasted time with real and elusive value; it wasn't about an amount of money, but a rejection of swallowing my own resentment.    I should have just felt gratitude for the offer.   I didn't.   That should be alarming.

I was happy to hear this:  "It has been strongly suggested to me the various disciplines laboring to build Fusion are adequately resourced, that the pace of progress is not limited by the number of people tasked to to any particular discipline, and that, to an actionable degree, the diverse priories guiding development are not in practical contest."

on the same issue since years.
I guess, nobody from Autodesk is listening. Or they are not capable to solve the issue. or they do not care on users.
An ESC possibility is the first thing you have to have on any program. Aborting a process is a right every user hast to have.
The programmers from Fusion 360 don't care... And we, the users, see time goes on the infinite amount of flaws this software has, despite the theoretical big functionalities it has.
Nothing is as important as being able to use the time you have on a productive way. This is not the case when the program freezes without possibility to go out of a loop we cannot control.
Waiting for a fundamental thing Autodesk has obviously decided to deny us is painful.
I am furious!

@marta.almajano

SolidWorks doesn't have this either...

Ctrl Alt Del works on my machine.

And of course - because I save often - I never loose any work, just a bit of time to reboot.

But the obvious question, "Why are you locking up? Can you Attach a file here that exhibits this behavior and perhaps a video of the process?"

I can relate to the occasional infuriating stall, but since I started this post 4 years ago I've learned to anticipate these situations mostly successfully .

All CAD software I know (Fusion 360, ZW3D, SolidWorks ...) has the occasional trouble with this. It usually happens when the geometry we're trying to modify isn't built robustly and the geometric modeling kernel runs into problems trying to create the desired feature anyway.

If you can share one or more models in a separate thread we can evaluate whether or not this might be the case.

I would guess that the programmers would like to add this function but it would be management that doesn't really care.

I do not think, ctrl-alt-delete (killing the program) is a functionality.

The problem is, Fusion starts "working" even before you can give in parameters. It does this by applying old parameters it remembers even from another design.

Where are those parameters? How is it possible, Fusion acts without being asked for? This is not helpful, it is annoying and time-killing.
This is the reason you always need a way to stop a process without being forced to kill the program.

This is what the Esc key does. Why not in Fusion?

I agree, sometimes is a problem with an object, with somehow corrupted parts. But, again, this has nothing to do with the necessity of stopping the process having trouble calculating.
I agree, programmers would like to add this functionality, but marketing people does not. It is not their time, that goes lost.

yes I agree 100% a ESC function to a stop process would be really helpful. Another issue I have when I do a complex fillet: I want it to be 1.7mm for example , it will try to compute a 1mm fillet first because I can't type fast enough 1.7mm so basically I end up having to wait the double amount of time...ridiculous IMO.

same with patterns and other functions. A one second delay or preview/ disable preview option would be really nice!!!

have you tried hitting ESC during fillet?  A "REAL" escape functionality actually is supported in Fusion for some operations, and I believe that Fillet is one of them.  If you can share the model where this 1, 1.7 mm fillet is very slow, I can try it out.

Unfortunately, ESC support is not universal, and we hope to extend this capability to other modeling operations.
