Boolean Operator in Fusion (as in Cinema 4D)

Hello,

I am a newbie to Fusion 360 so excuse me if I may say something obvious but I have been searching online and I cannot find a solution for this.

 

I am used to work with Ciname 4D and I have just arrived in Fusion.

In Cinema I used to work a lot with Boolean Operators for joinning or subtracting objects.

I understood the basic principle in Fusion but what I liked about Cinema was the possibility to be able to modify every single object all the time even after having done the boolean operation (as every single object wouldn't fuse with the other but would remain two separate identities).

Is it possible to do the same with Fusion360?

Modify->combine is the tool you’re looking for. Works only on solid bodies, however.

That is also one of the thing that I was trying to use but I cannot make it work.

 

Let's say I have a cube and I want to cut a hole through it: I create a cube and a cilinder and I combine them together.

Regardless of the options I select I alway end up with a unique body that I cannot modify any longer (let's say for example that I'd like to change the diameter of the hole).

 

Am I missing something?

Are you using Primatives or sketch and Extrudes?

Are you ticking Keep Tools?

 

Select the cylinder body icon in the timeline? - in Right Click Menu, Select Edit Sketch.

change diameter value.

Not an efficient workflow. Better to sketch a circle and extrude cut the hole or if it's just round use the hole tool. I've seen a few newbies using combine where an extrude cut is less work, less features in the timeline will be more efficient for you and a more efficient design. Mabe look through the tutorials.

Probably best to avoid using primitives for anything other than quick experimentation. You have far more control using sketches, extrudes, lofts etc.

Yes,

I was making examples with primitives just because it was an example, eventually I would use extruded sketches, etc...

I have actually forgotten about the timeline, I'll try with that, but there is not other way around?

Maybe I just have to get used to this new way of editing things...

I was using primitives to try, I thought it was quicker.

If I select "Keep Tool" I end up with two bodies (the two joined together or cut and the tool one) but that's not what I am looking for.

I'll try the way you mentioned, thank you very much!

Accepted solution

When using combine set the operation type to cut. Or when you create the cylinder set it to cut not new body. All these options can be edited from the timeline after creation. Oh and one of the best ways to get frustrated and waste time is use a workflow from a different type of software!😊
