1st question. How do I create a 2D silhouette of my part on the construction plane 1?
2nd, Is there a way to work on different levels? Example: say I want to draw some lines for machining later, but I dont want to have it on the same plane/level as the solid. Can I move my sketch to a different level?
For a silhouette press P for project and set the selection filter to bodies.
To sketch on a different level, right click on a plane or surface and select Offset Plane. Also look at the Construct menu for more option creating planes.

Edit. Create your plane before creating a sketch, there is an option to redefine sketch planes but you can get odd things happen if the XY are pointing in different directions on the new plane.
