1:1 View Based on Actual Screen Size?

Anonymous

I work on a large curved monitor, and after working on a part for a while, I start to lose my sense of scale.

To try to see the actual size, I put a ruler up to the screen and change the zoom until a known edge on the screen is roughly equal to the real measurement.

I would find it really useful if there was a button somewhere in the view panel that took your actual screen size from your Windows computer info, and back-calculated to show the real-life 1:1 scale.

Would you guys also find this useful?

Adobe Photoshop solved this quite easily with a simple single value. They have a spot to enter the dot pitch of the monitor. Once the app knows the physical size of the pixel on the display, it's trivial to proceed with this request. If the user scales their display for what ever reason, and this mangles this solution, I would recommend simply leaving this concern out while still providing a meaningful solution.

Karls 2 cents.

@bigtexan in an Adobe context, how do they handle multiple displays/pixel pitches? Can you enter them per-display, or does it require the user to constantly adjust them?

I can only set this as a single setting. If all the monitors are the same pixel pitch, then we are golden. If different, then I choose the monitor I prefer and use this value. I tend to purchase matched monitors, thus have a solution that works nicely.

It should be.

So any progress on this?  I've done workaround so many time to zoom to scale on my designs. It would be much smoother to zoom to scale 1:1 in one click!

@testjig

You can also create Named Views.

How does that work?

Manipulate the view to where you want.

(Include a scale component as described earlier in this thread if desired.)

Now right click and Create New View.

Give it a name.

Any time you want to return to a specific named view simply double click on it.

If you want to change it a bit, simply right click and Update Named View.

You can create multiple Named Views.

Thank you for your input, but that's a workaround, not a solution.  I often have many design opened at once and it locks the orientation, that would mean I need to do it on every design on many different orientation.

I see this thread has been marked as "solved", I hope that doesn't mean Autodesk will not work on a one click solution, to me it's not a solved issue.

Agreed, the named view idea is a workaround, not a solution.

The complexity of using a proper 'pixel's per inch' for the monitor scale calculation is both trivial mathematics and trivial programming.

As true with most of today's world, quality is not the goal. Today the goal is minimal product for the most $.
