Interface: Dockable Usable Parameters

Interface: Dockable Usable Parameters

Having the user parameters as a "Primary" window really limits is functionality.  I want to be able to dock it into the interface and leave it up as I'm working with a model.  This would allow users to quickly see the parameters they have and quickly change them (providing workarounds to a few of the requests listed below).  Right now, I literally work with temporary screenshots of my parameters window (not kidding!) when I have too many to remember all of them.

It appears that, in general, users are requesting a lot of UI enhancements here:

There are many times that I would like to reference my parameters list while working.  They already update in real-time, so why not let the window stay open while you model other aspects instead of forcing us to close it?

Really though... we should be able to access the parameters list from the dimension & feature value input boxes... like you can in Inventor. The way it is now is quite hideous. Having to copy & paste, or remember the spelling & case of each parameter is a PITA.

Completely agree!  But still, it's nice to see the list, it's expressions and it's values too.  There's just no reason this window has to be modal. The solver is obviously always updating those values and you can change those values via changing sketches and features, so it's not a question of calculation.  It's just another way to display what you're already looking at/editing.

^100. Do want.

I'd also love to see it interfacing with live design as effectively as Solidworks' equations does (letting you create parametres for previously undimensioned things etc)... Oh, and telling me what parametre something is set to (an extrude for example) when I go back to edit it, instead of just giving me the numeric value so I can't be sure what's assigned and what's not...

Agreed !
I want the same thing.  ( Good idea the screenshot, I'll do the same [for now I hope] )

This is a necessity as I get deeper in to parametric modeling.

Yes...

I would like the same thing as well.

Also,

maybe a parameter could be created on the fly by adding a special character (ex. & ) in front... (see image)

It would be very useful when calquing, since the optimal size may not be right.

I also use a screenshot of my parameters, but you still have to flip back and forth between the parameter screen and sketch.

1/ The parameters window needs to be made "modeless" or "dockable" so that you can interactively program parameter math as you create parameter-based constraints in the sketch, thus allowing you to move back and forth more easily between your evolving sketch and related parameter calculations and definitions.

2/ Additionally, when you select a parameter in the parameters window the referenced parameter should light up in the sketch, preferably with a ballon telling you the current assigned name, value, and if it exists, the formula for that parameter.

3/ I think there is a bug or unfinished "feature" where the entire sketch lights up with a confusing hazy blue outline when a "model parameter" record is selected in the parameters window. This current behaviour doesn't help with much.

4/ Would be nice if the calcualtion fields in parameters behaved and looked a little more like standard spreadsheet calculations, just because that's what we're used to

Thank you for your idea, this is being changed to future consideration.  We have it in our backlog to be able to expose your favorite parameters in the browser as a way to access them in the model.

I suggest that the parameters window will able to be dockable like the file/model dock, the same place (left of the screen) and if somebody will want to have the window back, he can use unpin icon.
also, in the current window, the columns are't resized automatic when the window size change.
there is a lot of info that is not editable that clutter the UI, I prefer a very basic "name of the parameter" - "value (mm/ang/etc.)" and an "i" icon that when you hover on it you will get balloon with all other info.

Yes - ability to keep parameters window open and create parameters from dimension dialogs (like inventor) would be a huge improvement.

+1!

Embarrassingly overdue, ridiculously easy to implement, no excuse to ignore or to indefinitely "consider".  See also here:

The suggested solution with parameters in the browser does not make sense unless I’ve overlooked something. Just make it non-modal, make it possible to sort parameters or move them manually and make it easier to enter them both in the table but also as input to dimensions as described (entering e.g. “Lenght=10 cm” )

This is badly needed. The parameters list needs the following:

1. Parameters window needs to be non-blocking (maybe even dockable as suggested here), i.e. users should be able to interact with the main Fusion 360 window without first having to close the Parameters window. Hello dual-display users.

2. Ability to sort by any of its fields

3. Ability to filter by typing into a search box (should search all fields, not just the parameter name)

4. Ability to organise parameters into folders

5. Ability to re-use parameter names when the parameters are in different folders, for example:

In this example there are four parameters named 'Length' which are differentiated by their folder context. Thus, the length of an M6x10 bolt would be referenced by the following variable name: Bolts_M6_10_Length , the underscores being implicitly added by the software.

Bump for an idea that really needs to be implemented!
