Change parameter units

Change parameter units

Involved in a project with both metric and imperial at the moment. Collaboaration has meant parameters have changed.

Even though 39 3/8in in super close to 1m it's annoying as heck that when I defined that parameter I can only change it's value not it's unit after the fact.

a unit converter built in to preference's that you tick when needed

Sorta, the point is when you set up a user parameter you have to chose a unit...meters, degrees, inches, even "unitless"

But once youv'e built a lot of other stuff based on many parameters and then decide you want to redefine a given parameter's unit, your only choice is to enter "3in" into a user parameter defined as "mm"

maybe I'm off base here, but when mixing metric and imperial or whatever, Fusion's inner math generates way more tiny rounding errors when geometry based on user parameters are fed numbers of a different unit. At least in parametric modeling. I've had plenty enough experience to have noted that direct modeling in fusion over time results in zillions of rounding errors. Even if your 100% in the same unit for the entire process.

you can do math in a demention

He's not trying to do the math, he just wants it to report the values in the units of his choice (they were initially set to the devil's units and then later they repented and wanted to switch to the more holy ones but the app kept him locked in the Daliesque fractional circle of Dante's Inferno)

no realy you can do the conversion in the demention string so it shows as inch but it`s in mm then when it get`s added to the others files they just put in *25.4 and it`s back in inch

Sure that's great as a kludge / work around but it kinda defeats the purpose of having units in the apps.

I support the origional post on this one.  Yeah you can do the math, but sometimes you need to leave a measurement in one system or another for a reason (say if you were using imperial fittings in a metric assembly). For example converiting a 5/8 hole for a UNS thread that's 5/8-18 to 15.875mm then marking it up on the drawing in metric as 15.875-18 makes no sense.

Exactly Daniel.

It's not about avoiding math. I've got plenty of sometimes complex expressions involving multiple parameters.

But if I want something to be an inch, I want it to be an inch, not 2.54 cm. Even if I change my mind later after defining a parameter's unit to be in cm. Apart from usually very, very small rounding error (which can add up on large scales), it's aesthetically annoying.

I just made my first all parametric part.

I am normally a metric user but I designed this paticular part in imperial. This was due to parts I was designing my part around were made in imperial. Now that my design is complete I decided I'd rather have it in metric. Therein lies the problem, all of my User Paramater units are in inches.

I want all of my model dimensions to be even millimeter measurements. If I could change the units of my user parameters to millimeters I could easily update the dimensions to what I need them to be.

Changing the Active Units from inch to millimeters changes model paramaters from inch to millimeters, it does not change the User Paramaters from inch to millimeters.

I'd like to see this as well (the original poster's request of being able to change the units for a parameter.

Same here. I accidentally put a parameter as millimeters when everything else is inches. I can't change the unit on that parameter even though it should be a quick double-click operation.

Yes, please improve this. It is one of those small but super annoying things…

Status changed to: Future Consideration

@wyattm,

Thank you for your idea, this is being changed to future consideration  You are correct it you are not able to change the unit in the column once it is initially created.  However if you have the expression set in inches and then type in a metric value the expression keeps the metric units.  Because of this, it is lower on the priority list than other modeling enhancements.

I just hit this.. was designing in metric, changed to imperial so i could draw things in inches, then realised i'd actually prefer it as metric, went back to change it and boom.. locked into inches, having to type in the value as 666mm 😞
