Importing DWG files

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi,

I'm new to Formit and am trying to import a 2D DWG file from digimaps so I can use it to as a base to build my model. When I have tried using the Import 3D Model some of the data is imported (layers etc) but I cannot physically see the imported file in the workspace.

Any help allowing me to see the imported file would be helpful.

Thanks,

Will

Hi Will,

Thanks for trying FormIt!

Have you tried hitting hitting "ZA" (Zoom All) to see if the geometry is simply far away from the origin?

Otherwise, we're happy to take a look at the file. I'll reach out via DM, or you can post the file here as an attachment.

I wanted to post what worked for Will in case it helps others:

Occasionally the geometry inside a DWG file may be very far from the origin, millions or billions of units in some cases. FormIt's rendering engine isn't designed to handle geometry this far away from the origin, so even Zoom All might not accurately display the imported geometry.

If you run into this, you can try:

  • Open the DWG in FormIt, hit Ctrl + A to Select All (you should notice the cursor change to the Move symbol, indicating something was indeed selected), then Ctrl + C to copy
  • Open a new window of FormIt by middle-clicking the icon on the taskbar, or searching for FormIt in Start
  • Hit Ctrl + V to paste the geometry into the new window. You'll see the geometry temporarily drawn on your cursor. Click somewhere near the origin to place it.

We'll investigate improvements here, like a message when this happens and perhaps the option to automatically move far-away geometry to the origin so you can view and operate on it.
