via setting and track widths

Hi All... my first post...

I am looking for some opinions on via sizes and track widths. Specifically, I’m laying out a UNO shield, so could use some expertise regarding,

40mA track & 200 mA track widths

size of vias used on an dense designs

i currently use, for vias, a 20mil hole and 30 mil annular ring.

Perhaps someone could direct me to the answers in general.

Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Welcome to our forums! Generally, you want to make sure to not go below whatever the boardhouse can produce. The via sizes you have are pretty generous so you shouldn't have any problems there.

As far as track widths go, I've always like the HAM radio rule of thumb "10mils/500mA" so for both of your current requirements a 10 mil trace will suffice. This rule meets or exceeds the IPC guidelines up to about 4Amps so you can get a lot of mileage out of it.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Thank you very much for the advice? You’ve answered my questions... and I like the ham rule of thumb... which I’m new to.
