Dynamic Blocks Showcase: share your favorite dynamic blocks and show us how you made them!

As a follow up to our latest dynamic blocks webinar, we'll post our favorite dynamic blocks here with Screencasts to illustrate how we created them.

Please join the conversation: share your own blocks or get some inspiration from your fellow community members. Let us know how you save time in your designs by using dynamic blocks!

Glad you got a better block out of it, thanks for the tip on using separate controls.

One more off-topic note.  I knew this before, but forgot it, and set myself up for issues in my latest drawing package because of it.

If you use xrefs and you find yourself creating a "new" xref, Eg a remodeled space with a new wall and door say.  If you use BYBLOCK properties on the door you won't be able to set a viewport override of that byblock property.  Say you want to use the "new" renovation xref for new electrical work.  Under that scenario the new room would be viewport overridden to a light gray as it is not applicable to electrical tasking.  But if the door had a byblock property, that byblock object would remain dark black as there is no way to set a viewport override.

Even if you could get it to work some how it would be confusion to the next drafter that received the file.

Best to NOT use byblock properties in an XREF

Best Regards

-Tim C.

Previously, I released these doors with ByBlock fill properties. I forgot that using ByBlock properties in an XREF limits the application of viewport override properties, meaning if an object has a ByBlock property, there is no way to apply an override to that object. This is problematic if the same XREF is to be used for both old and new work representation. As such, I created both an existing and new version of the block to allow viewport overrides to be applied as applicable.

I did mod the door from the previous one with (3) updates:

-change the frame steel to a single-line, use the layer and plot style to adjust the thickness

-The fill is now on it's own layer with bylayer properties

-Add a control to adjust the door stop width

The lisp provided is useful for placing and orienting the door between two wall-opening object lines.

Best Regards

-Tim C.

There is a tool called laytrans which allows you to change even block nested elements to display by layer. This does not work on text, dimension, or arrowhead styles but I always run this tool on client provided dwg files prior to linking into my own CAD. It allows me to easily override x-ref layers as needed.

Here is a block I created originally to represent sheathing in wall sections but because of the way it works, my team has used it for a multitude of purposes.

Just a simple rectangle that stretches, flips, rotations and various associative hatch patterns. Everything is by block so you can easily change color and linetype as needed.

If you follow / use the blocks I post this update is worth retrieving.

Many Updates, primarily changed byblock objects from Lay 0 to a dedicated layer with bylayer assigned properties.

As such both a new and existing set of blocks have been provided.  The intent was to provide better control for XREF viewport override control.

There is not much architecture involved with the buildings needed at water and wastewater treatment plant upgrades.  This building plan block serves my needs well; however, if you know of a better method, I would love to hear about it.

I was inspired by some things I learned recently from @timothy_crouse while working on a dynamic door block and applied them in upgrading my approach to building footprints.  Before, I had been using CMU blocks, some with array elements, to construct one wall at a time because the CMU blocks are linear.

I made a new dynamic block of a building (floor) plan.  The horizontal and vertical walls stretch at 8" increments.  A block table and visibilities control wall material, thickness and whether a brick fascia is included or not.

We use color dependent plot tables.  The wall polylines are on layer 0 so they take on the color of the insertion layer.  I've used the ANSI37 hatch at 45° scaled to be 8" squares with its origin at the block insertion point.  The hatch color is 21 which is the thinnest possible black line in our pen table.

The wall thicknesses vary.  Current choices are 4", 6" and 8".  The brick fascia is set at a nominal 4".  Air gaps are set in the block table as a real# value [wall thk+air gap].  These values can be edited in the block table to suit your own needs.

I never liked trimming walls to make openings.  When changes are required, the trimming work needs to be undone or redone by one means or another; so, I use masking in my door and window blocks so moving and resizing them is all that's needed.  The attached drawing includes the building plan block and some "wall opening" blocks (doors, vents, etc.).  I believe everything should have both color and linetype set to BYLAYER.

He use to work.

I would have to find the original post to see what's up or you could re-post it here.

That's looks like an earlier version.  Hmm I will have to look around, I am on travel for a month so it may take a bit.

Here are a few details and blocks used to create them for Com Designers.

The details are of the Method B Fiber Polarity Architecture.

Hope a few folks find them useful.

I found a problem with my scale block in that if you switched to a millimetre scale and then back to a metre scale it wouldn't show the numbers. That's now been fixed
