Creating telescopic block, what parameters?

Very inexperienced with autoCAD and have had no formal training - however, I am trying to create a dynamic block of a 3 section telescopic boom.

I am trying to make the boom extend in stages; i.e. starting with S3/S2/S1 fully retracted inside the base section. then using a parameter to show S3 moving out of the base section with S2/S1 still fully retracted. Once S3 is at its maximum stroke, S2 will extend with S1 still retracted. Once S2 has reached maximum stroke, S1 will extend to reach the booms maximum length.

I have created a "live" telescopic boom before, where all sections extend at the same time (S3 distance multiplier = 0.333, S2 DM = 0.666, S1 DM = 1), but I can figure out how to do the above.

Any help  is appreciated, bearing in mind I'll probably ask for a step by step of what I need to do!😂

The detail in the responses have been great. 

However, I'm using LT and it won't recognise any of those commands/have the buttons you do. 

Do you have any advice?

I can't do it exactly how you want. I only have LT as well, but attached is a pseudo way to do it. You need to manually stretch each extension. See the attached drawing

In AutoCAD LT you can not create nor edit constraints. Doing that you need the full ACAD version. 😞

But in LT you can USE (and that only) geometry which includes constraints.

Because your dwg includes a lot of drawing inaccuracies and inconsistencies I had to do some assumptions but I think the principle of the solution should be to understand.
