How to participate in the Community - Create and Answer

Autodesk Community is your place to ask questions, help others, and discuss all things Autodesk. We aim to keep the community as a welcoming and helpful space. Everyone has to start somewhere, so no question or discussion is too basic, and everyone can provide a valuable perspective or insight. If asking a question, we recommend that you make the most of the search feature as someone may have already answered your question or there might already be a discussion underway on the same topic. This should help you to get an answer faster than waiting for a reply. That being said, Autodesk Community is for much more than asking product-related questions. If you have an idea, a design or something you are proud of, share it!

Creating a topic:

If you’ve tried searching and not found a topic that answers your question or is a discussion you are interested in, you can start a topic in the relevant forum by clicking the ‘Start topic’ button to begin authoring a topic.

When authoring a topic, please include as much detail and context as possible so community members know what actions you are taking:

  1. Title – Clear and concise is key. Try to include the product, version and a short description of your question, issue or topic being discussed. This makes your topic easier to find by search and allows experienced community members to more easily to answer your question or join the discussion

  2. Details— If you ask a question, provide as much detail as possible to provide the full context surrounding your issue or question. Details such as the feature, tool, operating system, or error messages are especially helpful in identifying the issue.

  3. Share screenshots and videos – some issues are easier to understand when shown rather than written. We recommend embedding images and videos so any community member can quickly view what you have shared. Click here to learn about uploading videos on Autodesk Community.

  4. Share files – Where permissible, share the files you are working on so others can see what you are working on. Where you can’t share exact files, creating the scenario in a separate file can also give the community enough details to provide better advice. Attachments are added at the end of your post, so it’s best to add project files here rather than videos and images, which can be embedded into the main part of your topic.

When you reply to a thread, the original poster will be notified for continued discussion or follow-up if needed.

When replying, we recommend:

  1. Greet the user and mention them! Using the ‘@’ mention to address a community helps everyone know who you are directing your message to and also notifies them that they have been tagged on the community.

  2. Adjust your tone and expectations to the topic's skill level. Features that are obvious to experienced users may not be obvious to new users, so take this as an opportunity to pass this knowledge along. We also want to ensure that Autodesk Community remains a welcoming and supportive community, so being aware of your tone can go a long way toward helping everyone feel welcome.

  3. While pretty cliché, a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is worth thousands more. It’s easier for everyone to be on the same page when you share what you are seeing compared to writing it out. New users may also not know the software's layout, so visual formats can be especially helpful here.

  4. Ask questions! Community members may not know that they should include the product, product version, feature, OS, or other useful information in the troubleshooting process. Feel free to ask for more information.

If you create a topic and someone replies with an answer that solves your question, please mark the reply as an ‘Accepted Solution’ – see our guide on Accepted Solutions to learn more.

For topics and replies that provide valuable insights or make an extra effort, the ‘like’ and ‘upvote’ buttons are a way to show your appreciation to the author and highlight their reply. There’s no limit to the number of likes a user can give, so be generous and spread some appreciation throughout Autodesk Community.
