Hi,
I have a drawing where I cannot access the model space anymore. As soon as I click on the model tab or type in model, Civil 3D freezes up to a solid black background and no crosshair. I cannot type in any commands.
This happens only on one file, I already tried audit and recover, but had no luck so far.
Can anyone help me with this?
Best,
Marion

Try creating a new drawing from your dwt file.
Insert corrupt.dwg into new.dwg at 0,0,0 and explode block (which shares the same name of inserted drawing).
Save new.dwg > any change in accessing model space?
Hello @Anonymous
Sorry, to hear that you are having this problem. In order to help you, I need to ask you a couple of questions.
Any additional information you can provide along with posting the drawing will greatly help in solving your problem.
Thanks,
Wendell
If you have any Model Space views set. You could try checking the Select Initial View box on the Open dialog box.

Hi @BushW
Thank you for your quick reply. Please find answers to your questions below:
A coworker tried to open the file and he told me that eventually the model space came up, but it took at least an hour. The file is attached.
Best,
Marion
I opened the drawing in 2017. There was one message about lost sheet association. The drawing loaded quickly and a click on the Model tab brought me immediately to Model Space. The are Model Space opened to was blank, so I only saw a black screen. But a zoom extents let me see the objects in the model.
There are Xrefs that are missing. It's possible there is a problem with one of those. Try unloading the Xrefs before changing to Model Space. If this lets you switch. Try the Recoverall command to recover all the Xrefs. Also. It looks like there may have been Drefs. So recover any drawings containing them.
This is only based on what I've seen in the one drawing. So it's a guess based on that.

I had the same experience as @AllenJessup in 2016 and 2017. Drawing opened up quickly and I was able to switch to model space tab with no problem.
I also agree that it might be related to the XREF's so, I suggest following @AllenJessup recommendations on doing the Recoverall command to recover all the Xrefs to see if that solves the issue. I hope that help solve your problem.

Thank you @AllenJessup and @BushW!
Once I unloaded the xrefs I was able to access the model space. I reloaded them one at a time and ran a recoverall. Now the file seems to work fine.
Unloading xref's is my go to method of getting files open that are corrupt or fatal erroring. Normally when someone sends me a path to a file that won't open my first order of business is to copy the file to my local hard drive and disconnect the network drive so the software can't load the xref's. 95% of the time this allows me to open the file. Then the trick is just figuring out which XREF is the culprit!
