Escape Key Not Working

Anonymous
Not applicable

My escape key has stopped working for deselecting objects and I cannot add vertex along lines anymore. I can select the line, hover over the midpoint and select "Add Vertex" but nothing happens. I hit escape and the line does not deselect. I can shift select the line and it will deselect but not escape. All of the fixes I have found surrounding this involve having Photoshop open. I do not use Photoshop so that isn't my issue. I can restart AutoCAD and it works as it should for about 5 minutes before going back to the same issue. Any ideas?

Have you tried RegenAll command?

I have not. It started working right for about 30 minutes and then did the same thing so I shut it down. I will start over again tomorrow. When it does it again (not if, I've given up on that) I will give this a shot.

Jason,

Have you vacuumed your mouse and keyboard lately?

Download the hotfix which is linked near the bottom of this page:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-civil-3d/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticl...

I'm pretty sure this is how I solved it when I had this issue.

Cheers

I've been out of the office for the past couple of days doing a concrete testing course. I got back this morning and am having the same issue.

Tim, I tried REGENALL and it didn't work. Thanks for the advice though.

Dave the escape key works for every other program and in AutoCAD will even cancel out a command with typed in the prompt but it will not work to deselect and item. I also just discovered that it will escape from multitext edit BUT I cannot double click the text to edit it. PICKFIRST is set to 1.

Mick, I never have luck with the hotfix downloads but I'm definitely giving that a shot and see. I'm willing to do anything at this point to fix it. I'll keep everyone updated.

Thanks, guys.

That did fix the issue I'm having to the grip edit box only showing once each time but did not fix the issue I'm having with the escape key.

I found the issue but not what was causing it. For some reason it was the viewport itself that would lock everything up. I copied the viewport in the same location, deleted the old one and haven't had the problem since. One of the many, many reasons that AutoCAD irritates me with its finickiness. I have small little problems such as this pop up at least once every two weeks with absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Many users have mentioned Adobe products exclusive-holding the escape key.

For me, in ACAD 2020, it was Teamviewer.

I exited Teamviewer and the escape key immediately began functioning normally in ACAD

I have had the same problem with teamviewer.  I have found that if you hit escape while in teamviewer, the escape key stops working in AutoCAD.  Upon exit of teamviewer, the escape key works again.

Glad to have found this TeamViewer solution.
I found that simply minimizing the TV window fixes the issue, without exiting altogether.
I wonder if that is the cause of my CapsLock and NumLock keys acting up also (opposite of the lights)?

I'm having a similar problem with Fusion 360 from time to time.  While sketching, escape won't end the current drawing operation.  For instance, if I type "r" to create a rectangle and then decide I want to quit rather than making the rectangle, the esc usually works.  But from time to time Fusion gets into a mode where it doesn't work.  Quitting the application and restarting resumes normal operation.

Whenever you have this issue, the drawing tabs underneath your ribbon show which .dwgs you have open along with a "Start" tab on the far left. Click the start tab, then click the drawing tab you were working in and it solves the problem. I don't know why but this seems to fix majority of the issues I've encountered including anything having to do with Surfaces, Corridors, and Pipe Networks. When it doubt, Hit start.

Hope this works for you too!

alago6AEJ;
I was encouraged to see your reply with a possible solution / work-around!
I have waited to reply until I had a chance to test it, and today is the day.
Simply clicking the Start tab and going back did not fix the issue.
Actually starting a New file did fix the issue! I drew a line in the new file, and Properties Palette showed "Line".
I went back to my two other open drawings and the result was favorable!
When this wierdness happens, it carries across all open dwgs. The only good thing is that the program does not crash, and I can still save my work.

THANKS for the work-around.

OH WELL.

THE "NO SELECTION" ISSUE STARTED AGAIN.

15 MINUTES AFTER I REPLIED WITH THANKS FOR A POSSIBLE WORK-AROUND.

START TAB WOULD NOT RESPOND.

RIGHT-CLICK - NEW DID WORK, BUT PROBLEM PERSISTED IN THE NEW FILE.

HAD TO SAVE, CLOSE AND RE-START AFTER ALL.

No fix for this?? This issue is super frustrating. Seems like you only get 30-45 min to work even after you restart. It's like the machine needs to be shut down for the night then the next day all is good for a few days.

The solution that I found was to deleted the old viewport and create a new one. I still do not know what happened and have since upgraded to C3D 2020 from the time that I wrote this post. I have not had the issue in the newer version.

I'm having the same problem, except I'm working in Model space, so it can't be a viewport issue. Going to start doesn't help. Close Adobe products (I don't have TeamViewer, only Acrobat) doesn't help. Making new sometimes helps but only for a bit. I keep having to save, close, and restart AutoCAD. Problem increases over time until the next morning. I'm using AutoCAD 2018.

Still happening to me at least once a day.

All work-arounds have failed.

And I am still having the Hard Crash issue with the plain old Copy command.

(somewhere in another post of mine)

Need to go ahead and upgrade to 2022 anyway . . .
