Crash, a weird one...

Well, it's a grading thing, so it might not come as a surprise, but I'll share it anyway..

So, I was doing an excavation site, not too deep, not too big. My end-game process for getting what i need included:

  • 2 surfaces with a desired delta (just a lowered duplicate)
  • 2 grading grup, for each vertical phase
  • feature lines describing the bottom

The process - get to a certain level (duplicate lower surface), copy the features to the next site/group, grade them to daylight EG.

All went well, my plan worked, even showed it to the kid and HE LIKED it 😄

Then, for no apparent reason, C3D crashed, again. But hey, I'm Mr. Save-A-Lot, whatever.

BUt when I wanted to open up the drawing again, it just doesn't.

I have 128GB of RAM, and it eats it up within a minute, and does not open. And we're talking about a DWG that's a total of <10MB in size, end DWG was like 3.5MB.

So, I was forced to repeat it all, but with baby steps, saving, auditing, saving, auditing...

And there it was, a HALT mid save.
Ok, repeat from last save - audit - freeze.

And yes, it freezes on save or audit, after i do the COPY FL TO ANOTHER SITE.

Solution?

Copy the FL(s), explode them, and recreate them. And all is well.

For the life of me - I can't figure out why. Cause when i re-did them, i removed no points or whatever to make them different. It just works.

Maybe this helps someone, sometime....

How are you copying the grading/feature lines objects? There has almost always been issues in C3D with using the ACAD COPY command on C3D objects. I remember early on it was considered best practice to NEVER copy a C3D object unless it has its own copy feature. I'm sure it has something to do with that.

Hey,

nah, I used the appropriate procedure - select, copy to site. I know grading are fidgety about details, so I take great precaution 🙂

In the end, the copying itself didn't crash a thing, nor subsequential grading. It was the save, and the audit, AFTER I've copied them and done whatever i did later.

So, there's something for sure, but I'm no programmer, so i managed with explode after "copy to site", and recreate the FL in the new site.
