Civil 3D 2018 | Slow Selection?

Is anyone else seeing really slow selection times?

I'm in the early stages of a new +/- 900 lot residential subdivision, doing the typical swapping of this size lots for that size over there, etc in client fashion, and I literally timed it at +/- 3 seconds to select a single Parcel with Properties Pane open (before a Select Similar to get a resultant count).

Not sure if it's an issue with Civil 3D 2018.1 as this is the first time I've used Parcels in 2018 (this is my pilot project), or not - I have also just recently installed Windows Fall Creators Update, but nothing else seems (no other application) to be having an issue at all.

Cheers

Yes -- the report the team is working from lists all the versions mentioned above.

Thanks for following up.

In my opinion, this *specific* bug only affects 2017 and 2018 running on Win 10, version 1709.

I'm not saying that a similar problem doesn't exist on Win7 boxes, but I feel like that is a distinct, separate issue.

We didn't have this until Win 10 boxes updated to v1709. And it is certainly affecting C3D 2017, because we are not running 2018.

Not sure if this is the case for everyone, but I have noticed that the materials in my drawings are getting overpopulated causing files sizes to balloon. Also, when I have chased this through the Xrefs (purged all the materials) I have noticed that drawings with slow selection had improved. See the image below for a list of materials that goes on and and on...

image.pngI am not sure where they are coming from as the architectural files I receive do not contain them.

@rkmcswain@BlackBox_

This slow selection with the Properties Palette open remains an issue in C3D 2019.

Slow selecting of AEC objects is a pain and has been going on for ever.

I keep my properties pane closed and have repathed the F1 key to open the pane.

make my selections then hit F1 to open the properties when needed.

Sucks but saves lots of time.

We're researching this issue for a fix in the 2019.1 update.

Will there also be a fix for 2018 and 2017?

Give this a go guys...

Uncheck this!Uncheck this!

**Belay my last. The issue was not resolved. Strange that it shortened the selection lag temporarily until switching from floating model space to model space.

FWIW-

Setting the REGENAUTO variable to 'OFF' solved my slow selection problems

Is there going to be a fix for Autodesk 2018?

Turning this off seemed to help a little bit but my civil 3d properties window dialog boxes are still very slow to populate. I wasn't aware that I had RegenAuto "ON" actually, as I try to optimize performance, but I recently started at a new employer and I believe that the startup lisp that they have compiled as the company standard sets some variables to values that I wish it didn't.

At least I can change the variables I want to, I just have to do it whenever I start the program.  You have to pick and choose your battles when you work at a big company.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Having the properties window open all the time is probably not the best choice when working with C3D entities. Try selecting 500+ cogo points with properties open. Get some coffee after doing so because it will be a while. Ctrl+1 has become second nature for me and I only evoke properties when I need it. You could set a custom user.lsp to autoload after your company startup lisp runs to change whatever they are forcing you to use. That way you don’t need to worry about making sure your performance setting are what you’d like.

I was referring to the dialog box/window that pops up for the actual civil 3d object properties.... like when you select an alignment, surface, corridor, whatever, and right click and select alignment properties, surface properties, corridor properties.  Those populate slowly for me (and it doesn't matter what tab is the first to show up, all are slow).
I also have a hotkey set up for my general ACAD properties box and my layer manager and try to keep them closed as much as possible.

Hello Yarris,

Was this fixed in the 2019.1 update that came out Thursday, we are seeing very similar behavior in 2018 P&ID when selecting, copying, or Naming Objects. This is company wide on different OS's and machines.

I was having the same issue with delay while selecting. The contextual tabs where causing my issue. To fix I went to

Options

-Selection

-Ribbon Options

-"Contextual Tab States"

I then changed the "Object selection maximum for contextual tab display" to 1

Instantly made my selections faster.

Hope this helps. Contextual Tab States.png

It could be an xref file causing the trouble.  I detached an old unused xref file and it fixed the problem completely.  I can't explain why that worked.

I have found that, in the CUI, expanding Ribbon, then Contextual Tab States and selecting the options that are slow (for me it was Cogo points, and multiple cogo points mostly). With the problem Contextual tab selected on the left, select Full without Focus under general display type, on the left. The tab will still appear but it will not automatically change the ribbon. This fixed the problem for me. See attached screen shot

Hi @TimYarris -

Any chance we can get an update on this?

Still have the same +/- 3 second lag when selecting even a single Parcel using Civil 3D 2019.2 & beta.

Selecting even a single COGO results in the same lag, with the added bonus of the Editor window losing focus until I mbutton pan to regain focus (not just with COGO, but seemingly an issue with many C3D Objects).

The losing focus part is extremely unhelpful when you're in the process of selecting multiple COGO and the lag precludes the active selection you just attempted to quickly make, until you first mbutton pan to return focus to the Editor just to duplicate that step.

I do not experience this behavior with vanilla AutoCAD entity selection (even in C3D).

Separately, @Anonymous - I appreciate the suggestion, but I've just tried that and still experience all of the original issues as described above.

Cheers
