Civil 3D 2018 | Slow Selection?

Is anyone else seeing really slow selection times?

I'm in the early stages of a new +/- 900 lot residential subdivision, doing the typical swapping of this size lots for that size over there, etc in client fashion, and I literally timed it at +/- 3 seconds to select a single Parcel with Properties Pane open (before a Select Similar to get a resultant count).

Not sure if it's an issue with Civil 3D 2018.1 as this is the first time I've used Parcels in 2018 (this is my pilot project), or not - I have also just recently installed Windows Fall Creators Update, but nothing else seems (no other application) to be having an issue at all.

Cheers

I deal with slow selection of objects as well, I get it with multiple versions, and I'm curious what kind of license you have for your 2018.1. Is it a network license that is stored on a server other than a local server?

Hi @LeafRiders -

All local standalone installs here, being that we're an SMB.

We just recently converted from Infrastructure Design Suite Premium (perpetual, maintenance), to AEC Collection (subscription, rental) when we had several new hires, so that we'd all be on the same version & applications.

Never had this problem before, under IDSP; only after going AECC rental.

Selecting vanilla AutoCAD entities such as Lines, Polylines, etc is near instant for Properties Pane to populate.

Selecting (seemingly) any Civil 3D Object such as Profile, Profile View, Alignment, etc, there's a +/- 3 second lag before populating Properties Pane... The ONLY exceptions to this lag, appear to be when selecting Assemblies & Sub-Assemblies, where Properties Pane is near instant.

I've tried enabling & disabling hardware acceleration, level of detail, and even disabled all LISP routines, Reactors, etc.

This is a productivity killer.

I have the same problem in 2017, especially cogo points. Sadly it's becoming faster for me now to close the properties tab and reopen it only when absolutely needed than keeping it open.

If the delay starts to happen with all object (non c3d), check to see how many layers (including xref) are present in the drawing, starting at 1000+ I began to see a different in selection speed and it becomes seconds (1-2-3-4 and more) depending on the total number of layer present, using layer filters does fix the situation if it lowers the number of layer displayed to low values

The issue has to have been Windows 10 Fall Creators Update; more specifically, that reinstalling a handful of drivers seemed to resolve the issue.

I hadn't thought of that, as I'd just gone through and updated NVIDIA Quadro P4000 driver, etc. prior to updating Windows, but reinstalling it, and double checking the settings seem to have fixed the issue, as selecting a Profile is now as fast as selecting a Line (and it most definitely was not yesterday! Haha).

I noticed that several (non-AutoCAD) settings were not right for what I'd very much intentionally set them for throughout Windows, and had to go back through and re-configure them again.  That leading indicator made me go back through and check some NVIDIA settings, which we'rent correct either.

In any event, make sure your IT validates any critical drivers, etc if/when ya'll go with Windows Fall Creators Update - the only thing I'm really after with it, is hoping Microsoft/Intel re-enabled NIC teaming again - which was available in initial versions of Windows 10, and has been sorely missed as a Civil 3D user with projects on a file server. Haha

Cheers

Well, shoot - I've only been using Civil 3D 2018 for a few hours now, and it's already back to being bogged down when selecting Civil 3D Objects.

Alignment Station Offset Labels seem to be the worst, with a 2-3 second lag on selection, followed by a 1+ second lag when deselecting.

Selecting a Profile to grip-edit PVIs is back to 1-2 seconds when Properties Pane is open, followed by a 0.5-1+ second lag when deselecting.

Closing and relaunching Civil 3D has almost no improvement. Restart my workstation seems to have significant improvement, but having to interrupt my work to restart my workstation 3-4 times a day isn't a solution either.

Yes, closing Properties Pane helps... But I need the Property values (depending on the Object being selected for this design task), hence my having it open. Haha

I've been seeing this since v2016. Each year, the product gets more bloa  features, and selecting on an object triggers so much stuff, like contextual ribbon tabs, properties information, quick props, special grip styles, fancy highlighting...

But even with the computer hardware of today, this should NOT be happening.

I'd like to add up the HOURS it has added to jobs and send the bill to ADSK.

I don't think it's a Win10 issue as I have Win7 (C3D 2018.1) and experience the same issue.  I believe it has to do with the contextual tab loading.  I see a 3+ second delay in selection of a Civil3D entity and THEN a 4+ second delay to release the entity if I hit "ESC".  I see this with feature lines.  Our surveyors see it with COGO points.  I've had better luck when working at home (via laptop) and not network connected...but that is not an option during a typical workday.

We have standalone installations on all machines.  I have a laptop that I use at work and home with 2 profiles (network connected vs. not).  Not sure what the solution is...but I am hoping Autodesk is working on it.

I've been having a lot of slowness lately. But it's not just selecting objects; it's running commands, too. I can click or type a shortcut, wait a delay and get a prompt. It used to be a minor annoyance that it would only register the 't' in 'tr' before I hit the space bar, but now I have to wait for it to even register the 't'. It's been slow for most of the year, and then got really slow after this latest Win10 update. Not fully convinced they're related, but I can't rule it out yet either.

I'm still on 2017, too, so that could be part of it 😉

Now that you've mentioned that...I've experienced that too.  Erase, Copy, Move commands for instance.  Something is bogging it down.

We are seeing the same 3+ second delay on AEC object selection.

As a workaround, we have been selecting a simple line and then selecting the AEC object whenever we are just moving labels, etc.

The common set of properties palette is then effectively empty so it loads immediately. This removes the 3+ second delay when selecting and moving/editing AEC objects (labels etc.) when the properties palette is open.

Closing the Properties Palette also resolves the delay but isn't really a good option for us.

Any other workarounds/fixes?

WORKAROUND!!!

Collapsing the sections of the properties window prevents Civil from reading those properties from the object when you select it.

With some experimentation we discovered that there is usually only one section of the Properties Palette which takes the extra time to populate.

For example the curve label shown in my screenshots has two General sections in the Properties Palette. One is the AEC General section and if we collapse it, the 3 second delay goes away!!!

It also remains collapsed for Every curve label. We have to collapse the sections for every type of object individually (and the offending panel is different for different object types) but once that was done, we could work at next to normal speeds again.

As long as you are automatically saving changes to your workspace, this collapsed state stays collapsed from one drawing to another and from one session to another.

We have decided to collapse the AEC object sections on the Properties Palette and then only expand them when we need to edit a setting, then collapse them again.

It is a dirty workaround but is more manageable than adding 2 hours of work per user to our day every day.

The Edit Profile Geometry PI window still takes 10 seconds or more to edit a single field on a single PI.

While this is not a great permanent solution.  It does work rather well.  The 3 second delay goes away and makes the selection almost instant.

In some files I experience delays in just loading a command (like erase)...but those files are inherently slow that I consistently fix for a short amount of time.

Win 7 standalone C3d 2018 here and it's been increasingly slow for a couple of years. Add in object data and I almost have time to make a cup of tea if trying to select all objects (which are all polylines with object data). Even a few hundred is very very slow, but an entire map is horrendous!!!

Collapsing part of the properties window has definitely speeded things up. Thanks for the tip.

I have been receiving a lot of comments about this same issue from people in our office. Hopefully Autodesk gets a hotfix out quick!

We are running on Windows 10 Pro (1709 Fall Creators Update), things were fine after we migrated to Civil 3D 2018 in the fall. Not sure if this is happening because of recent Civil 3D Updates or Windows updates.

I am running an i7 with 24g ram and a quadro 1200 on windows 7 Pro. Ever since we went to c3d 2018 from 2015 last month, selecting a series of c3d objects is just frustrating. I often have to manipulate groups of c3d points where windowing is not possible, and closing the properties window is a cumbersome workaround to speed up the selection process. Can we get fix for this soon?

@BlackBox_ - did you ever figure anything out on this?

I'm seeing the same ±3 sec delay when selecting AEC objects with PROPS open.

Selecting core ACAD entities (line, text, etc.) is instantaneous.

Selecting AEC entities with PROPS closed is fast.

I've tested with the network cable unplugged (and no WiFi) and there is no change - which should indicate this is not a network related issue.

Regretfully no, @rkmcswain.

The simple solution so far -  running 2018 + 2016 here, skipped 2017, and will be skipping 2018 for 2019 save undiscovered issues  - is to configure & use Quick Properties in lieu of Properties Palette where possible, and with as few Properties as possible.  That, and being mindful to close Properties Palette prior to selecting COGO, etc then toggling back on using Ctrl+1 after selection as that does have a measurable difference in display time of Properties Palette.

As soon as my system bogs down to where the 3+ second lag is happening again, I save my work, and restart my workstation which is a complete PITA, but does seem to make it better.

I simply do not have non-billable time to spare with my current workload, and aside from my personal settings (which I'm happy to compare), this is the best I have to make these apps usable (which is kind of pathetic, give my workstation specs, frankly). My CPU rarely hits over 7% unless I use my Core Console plot utility from File Explorer (then it nearly maxes out until parallel plot jobs are done). RAM stays around 12 GB using several apps besides C3D, and my GPU never even breaks a sweat.

Wish I could offer you something better, but it looks like we're all being held back by this.
