Hello people.

I would like to know if the 2018 version for Civil 3D files will be fully open and operated on the Civil 3D 2017 version.

Tanks!

Those that know can't say.

But if Autodesk holds to there more recent norms, it should work.

Recent norms? sorry but no, some time over the summer of 2016 there was an update that essentially made 2017 not compatible on the C3D 2016 software, many of our clients were not happy at all and we had to go back and redo jobs. it was basically a format change even though they kept the (2013 autocad) format.

Civil 3D 2017 objects have never been compatible with 2016. Originally the next release of Civil 3D was never compatible with the previous ones. Lately they've been trying to hold the format for three to four years. So going by recent patterns 2018 would probably be compatible with 2017. It's not a guarantee and we won't know until the release.

It's not the AutoCAD drawing format that creates the incompatibility but the way the Civil 3D objects are built. With minor changes you could have most of them compatible and maybe one or two classes of objects not revertible. With large changes nothing will work.

This was not done maliciously. It was not done to mess people up or "force" everyone to upgrade. It's a natural process in the upgrading and improvement of the program and we can guess that it will happen every few years.

I have to agree with this, even though Autodesk says that there isn't a file format change between 2017 and any other versions that use the 2013 dwg format this hasn't been my experience. I open a blank drawing in c3d17 and save it with nothing in it, or just text in it. Then when I open it in c3d15 it will not let me save the drawing. This is holding us up from transitioning my CAD department to 2017. I want to make the move, but our files need to play well with our client's files and right now I don't have any confidence in that ability.

As I mentioned above the AutoCAD Drawing Format did not change. The Civil 3D objects changed. When you open a drawing in Civil 3D there are styles and blocks created and saved. You'd have to open a drawing in plain AutoCAD 2017 to see it open in 2016. That may also depend on what template you used and what's in it.

If you have clients that need 2016 file formats you're stuck waiting for them to upgrade. Some backward compatibility can be achieved by using LandXML but it's not worth the effort if you have to do it a lot.

There are two compatibility issues to consider; the AutoCAD dwg file format and the Civil3d object formats.  Both of these must be compatible with whatever version of the software you're trying to open the file with.  Historically Autodesk would change the dwg format every three years, but last year they broke with that tradition.

The Civil3d object format is managed by a separate Development team.  In the early years of the software they were changing things every year, so there was no backward compatibility at all.  As things got more stable they started to synchronize their changes to the three year cycle, so that we could share drawings back and forth across versions.

Keep in mind that change is driven by customer requests - the Wish lists and Idea forums.  Last year the Civil3d Dev team had enough pressure on them, and enough time to implement some of the requests that they chose to go ahead and make changes to the 2017 object format.  The AutoCAD development team apparently did NOT feel the same way, and chose to continue using the current dwg format for one more year.  This means that the pressure on them will increase, they have more time to make changes and the backlog of wishes is building up.  I believe that they will have to bow to that customer pressure in the 2018 version, and change the dwg format.

What this means is that 2017 Civil3d drawings may become orphans.  They're not compatible with previous versions of the software because of the C3d format change, and if they are opened and saved from newer versions the dwg format will be changed so they cannot be reopened in 2017.

Thank you for the post!

Here in Brazil the 2018 release will happen by the end of April.

If you have any news before, please, let me know.

Happy new year!

It'll be approximately the same release date in North America. We may get some info a week or two before that date but that's all. I've been thinking. The real kicker would be if the Civil objects remained the same but the AutoCAD drawing format changed. They're not handled by the same teams so that could be a possibility. One of the joys of working in a vertical.

That is because your DWG still contains C3D non-graphical (versioned) data in it, even though you don't have graphical objects present.

If you want a nice clean, pure AutoCAD DWG file, use vanilla AutoCAD, or one of the low-cost clones out there. Anytime C3D touches a DWG, it's going to "infect" it with data you may not want, especially if you're trying to make a nice small drawing. I suppose you could export to R12DXF too (objects only!)

As others have stated, the first seven versions of C3D weren't backwards compatible at all. It wasn't until C3D 2014 came out that you could work on 2014 files in 2013, then 2015 and 2016. C3D 2017 is not backwards compatible. I don't know why so many people that use C3D don't understand that or can't be bothered to look up this simple fact.

It's obvious that a lot of people don't understand how Civil 3D is built and how AutoCAD is built. This leads to this confusion about backwards compatibility. Autodesk needs to do a much better job explaining the difference between C3D objects and drawing versions. What would be much better is if there was no need to know in the first place, but that requires a complete change in how C3D works, which won't happen.

Even though no information regarding C3D 2018 is out, I can almost guarantee that C3D 2018 will not be backwards compatible because the DWG format was upgraded. This means all C3D 2017 files are stuck in their own version and for at least the next year C3D 2018 files will not be backwards compatible either.

Basically the Civil team made a mess of things because they felt the need to upgrade the C3D object format regardless of the DWG format for 2017. Now that 2018 is about to come out, once again the next version will not be backwards compatible even if the Civil object format isn't changed because the DWG format changed.

No, not quite. The Civil 3D team made decisions regarding the C3D object format based on the 'normal' (i.e., what had been the norm for many release cycles) to update their format when the dwg format updated, which had been a 3 year life cycle. SO changes were actually slated for the 2016 version (2013, 2014, 2015 were the 3 year cycle). When Autodesk broke that cycle for the 2016 version, the C3D team had to change their update accordingly. When it was then found out during the next development cycle that 2017 would also keep the same dwg format the C3D team had to make the tough decision to go ahead with their object format change, otherwise their new tools that had been intended for 2016 would also miss the 2017 release.

So, please don't put the blame on the C3D team for things that were out of their control...there's enough other things that they are accountable for Smiley Indifferent Instead, be thankful that we got the 4 years of interoperability after each of the previous 9 versions all being completely on their own.

You're acting like the Civil Team isn't part of Autodesk. They would know when the DWG format is changing and when it's not. The changes made that required a new Civil object format could have waited for another cycle while they fixed many broken items. It would be much less of a head ache to the actual users if they did this. Then it would be only 2018 that isn't backwards compatible and keep with the way base AutoCAD has been setup. Instead, look at how confused many people were regarding 2017 and how Autodesk's lack of communication compounded the issue.

That seems to be right based on later information. Hopefully the Civil 3D team will be able to synchronize their upgrades with the DWG format changes by the next release.

So this essentially means that if I am receiving / sending files with Civil 3D objects from multiple people who use 2016, 2017, and 2018 that I have to have all three versions installed on my computer? That seems like a lot of installation space on my computer and I will have to make multiple template files per version of CAD. I am going to ask the dumb question here... but there is no work-around? Will landxml exporting / importing work between different verisons?

2013-2017 AutoCad runs on the same dwg format. 2018 isn't compatible with them.  If you save back from 2018 to 2013-2017 you will loose object data in C3D.  My suggestion just revert to 2017 and stay there. 2018 is useless right now. That is unless you do not share dwg files with anyone and everyone else you work with is on 2018 as well.  Y

2013-2017 AutoCAD files share the same DWG format, but only 2013-2016 Civil3d files share a common OBJECT format.  You can save back to a previous DWG format, but there is not (and never has been) an option to save back to a previous C3d OBJECT format.

Use any version that works for you, and the people you share drawings with.
