3D models/ parts losing location

I've searched around  the forum to try to resolve this issue with no luck. my 3D models/ assemblies with lose there home after saving and reopening. in some instances the model "explodes" while working on it. it seems to happen on models that contain a few hundred 3d objects. I'm beginning to think this is the issue. when modeling I import .STEP files of the hardware used. these .step files are downloaded from McMaster car.

has anyone had this issue? if so any suggestions to correct, or suggestions to prevent this from happening.

I've tried turning off solid history with no success.

Hi @caseymcdonough91,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD Mechanical forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Thank you for screen shots, that always helps. Most often when I see this, it is due to a constraint conflict. Since many of your parts started as STEP, it is possible the constraints within the part conflict with the ones in the drawing.

If you would like to share the file, I would be happy to take a look to see if I can see what is going on.

Also, if you have not done so already, please install the latest updates for your installed version of AutoCAD Mechanical.  Note that for AutoCAD Mechanical (and all Toolsets), there will be 2 updates to install, one for Mechanical, and one for core AutoCAD.

Cheryl,

thank you for the reply. much appreciated. this was one of my worries. I do import .STEP files, mainly hardware/ mechanical fasteners.  this issue seems to happen when my model has a lot of hardware. I have attached a the problem drawing for you to look over.

Thanks again!

Hi @caseymcdonough91,

Thank you for the files, I did have a chance to check them.  While I did not experience the issue you described, I did see a considerable slowdown in the file and a couple times when I was zooming or panning objects would be selected.

When I switched the visual style from Conceptual to 2DWireframe, the slowdowns were eliminated and I did not have the problem with parts getting selected. Is it possible this was happening to you also and they were accidentally getting moved?

I did check the file for corruptions but did not find any.

All the best,

well my problem isn't slowdowns. my issue is with my 3d models "deconstructing" themselves.  when 3d modeling, is there something I have to do to associate the parts to one another? generally I use the move tool. Example: I will bore and countersink a hole in a 3d component, I will then take a 3d .step file of the desired fastener, and MOVE the fastener into the bored hole. I use my 3d object snaps to associate these parts. is there another way that is more robust?

one other issue that has been persistent, and seems to happen when I'm experiencing the "deconstruction issue" is is  "The drawing cannot be migrated. the drawing you selected does not contain any standard. select another drawing with a standard to migrate." this happens when I try to dimension a drawing.

the fix I have been doing is to go into options, and reset my AM: standards from ISO to ANSI. I then apply that change and close my options window. I then set my dimstyle to my desired style, and everything seems to function again. this fix does not fix any sort of part association issues.

these are two issues I'm constantly facing. I'm assuming its something that I am the root cause of. I'm trying to correct any issues in my process.

Hi @caseymcdonough91,

That does sound unusual. I suppose you might have a damaged install of AutoCAD Mechanical or there are missing updates.

How To: Installing AutoCAD Mechanical Updates

Reset to Defaults - How to reset AutoCAD to defaults

Reinstall from the operating system - How to repair or reinstall AutoCAD installation

Please let me know if this helps.

All the best,
