QTY Not Updating In BOM

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi All,

I'm having an issue with the BOM QTY not updating after copying a block on the same drawing.  When filling out the Properties there is an option to under Management to connect other blocks that are the same, which then updates the QTY in the BOM.  But after filling out the block properties and adding the balloon I want to copy that same block again, but for some reason it's not updating the QTY and wondering how to connect it to the original block so the QTY updates in the BOM?

Hi @Anonymous,

Is this AutoCAD Mechanical or something else? It doesn't look like core AutoCAD.

Hi John,

I'm using AutoCAD Mechanical 2014 but I've also got the standard core AutoCAD as well if the QTY in the BOM could be done with that.

Hi @Anonymous,

I don't work in Mechanical and the BOM is part of that application as opposed to core AutoCAD. If you want to share a sample file however, I am happy to take a look to see if I can help.

Hi @Anonymous,

I have seen something similar occur when a block or content library object is duplicated using Copy/Paste. I believe it usually has to do with multiple instances of attributes and constraints.  How are you duplicating the block?

If you would like me to take a look at the block, I would be happy to do so. Please use the ETRANSMIT command and include any Xrefs or other associated files.

All the best,

Hi,

What I'm doing is using copy/paste but I've tried using AutoCAD Entities under special paste and even trying to save as a different file and adding it to my original file in a similar way to Inventor but nothing works and not sure what I'm actually doing wrong to get the Qty to increase.

I've attached a snapshot of the issue and also an AutoCAD file but the component is a block and doesn't have any Xref's attached to it as the component front was copied into Microsoft paint and then pasted using Special Past for paint then saved as a block.

Hi There,

I had a look at the drawing and it seems your part reference was disconnected. Try to select the orange icon there, it should get you to have it activated. Then copy and paste your model, you should see quantity updating fine.

Hi,

I tried clicking on the orange icon in the BOM and nothing happens and the Qty still says 1.

Hi Graham,

Once you click the orange icon, it should change into blue that means your part ref is active. Then try to copy your object in the drawing, it will change the quantity to the right value. Did you try testing it out with the drawing i sent to you ?

Hi,

The icon on the BOM table that I have are blue.  I couldn't use your drawing as I'm working with AutoCAD 2014 so if you could say save it in for 2014 then I'll try yours.

Graham

Hi,

Thanks for sending the cad file in 2014.

Tried it and still no joy and even tried making a new template and the Qty will still not change when I click on the orange symbol in the snapshot.  Would it be down to the way I'm copying and pasting, as I'm using Ctrl C and Ctrl V and I've even tried using Copy from the Modify tab and using Paste from the Clipboard tab and selecting Paste and even Special Paste then AutoCAD Entities.

Is there any settings that I could also look at as well.

Regards

Graham

Hi Graham,

It seems strange here. Please go to help - About AutoCAD Mechanical and take a screenshot and attach it to your reply. We will try the same build and see if we could reproduce it.

Did you have any custom CUI loaded with your Mechanical ?

Hi,

Didn't change any CUI settings at all and all I've done is saved a Inventor template to DWG file to use in AutoCAD and wouldn't thought that would make a difference.

Is there something in the CUI that I could try?

Graham

Hi @Anonymous,

I am sorry that this thread is still on-going and does not yet have resolution for you.  Please allow me to start this from the beginning so i have a clear idea of what you are experiencing in this process.

Please tell me the exact steps of your process and with which applications you use in each step.

Please also make a Screencast that demonstrates your steps.

I am also curious about the exact version of your applications and the operating system you have installed.  If you have 32-bit involved, then the model documentation from the Inventor model will likely not function properly.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Hello @Anonymous,

I think the second block was inserted before part reference definition was created.

Please try below steps and let us know if this helps;

1. Command: copyclip>>Select the second block

2. Open a new drawing

3. Pasteclip and insert the block anywhere in the screen

4. command: ampartref>>Block option and select the Block

5. Rename the block if required, in the Part Reference dialog box and click OK

6. copy this block to verify if the quantity is updated.

Thanks,

Hi All,

Sorry for the late reply.

Starting to slowly get to the bottom of the issue with the BOM Qty not updating and noticed when the Name in the BOM has a U value it won't update the Qty when copying and pasting the same block, but if the name from the properties does go over to the BOM, the Qty will update when copying and pasting the same block.  So sometimes the Name I've given the block doesn't always go over to the BOM but in the properties it reads as it should.  Item 1 in the BOM screenshot it shows U48 but in the Properties screenshot under Misc it says the block name.

So how can I change the U value in the Name of the block in the BOM and not just overriding it as this doesn't work?

Regards

Graham
