Write protected drawings

I am running Windows Vista on a laptop (2 gb memory) and have just installed Acad LT 2008. I transferred drawings and can only open them in read only. I have gone back and unchecked the read only box from Windows Explorer and have even rebooted but the drawings still open as read only and cannot be saved or "save as" either. Any suggestions?

where are the files located exactly?
Are you logged in as Admin in Vista?

I made a file under "Autocad LT 2008" called "Drawings". I usually make
subfolders there according to job.
Where do I check about being logged in as Admin?

That is not the best filing method on the planet: explore changing this
ancient concept to something more practical for ALL your files, AutoCAD or
not, start at MY DOCUMENTS.

Is this a personal PC (then you are logged in), or a company PC (in which
case you need to ask your IT person for help). Vista is very particular
about a lot of things, file location included.

Move the folder to My Documents: change the folder's settings in Windows
Explorer away from Read-only, repeat for the files inside it.
Make sure there are no DWL extension files in that folder.

Unlike Dean, I don't like to start at the MY DOCUMENTS folder because I
use other programs that don't use the Windows open file box and start at
C:\ With those programs, having to navigate through the directory mess
that was introduced with the MY DOCUMENTS folder is a royal pain in the
neck. Originally what I did was place a DRAWINGS directory right at the
C:\ and divided that into sub folders (actually its only subdividing is
for archives since very few of my jobs require more than 1 or 2 files. I
now have switched to using a network location that has a folder called
FDRAWINGS that is part of my F-mapped drive, and the F-mapped drive is
automatically backed up nightly with a weekly cycle onto an external
drive. In the file dialog I have added the FDRAWINGS folder as a
shortcut. Files received from outside are stored in a separate location.
In my case they are in a directory called CAD FROM ARCHITECTS, but could
be ODRAWINGS or anything else for that matter.

Dean, Moving the files worked great. I guess I need to read up on Vista. I
didn't know that it was so picky where the files were. Thanks SOOOOO much!!

I honestly don't care if you use My Documents or C:\WHATEVER, it's the same
concept, the point is to move away from burying project/work files under
program folders 🙂

Folders naming is worthy of it's own thread regularly, thanks for sharing
your structure.

I think that the best thing we did was finally push the backups from
being manual to being automated. Also, since the location is common and
shared, we no longer have the issue of checking who had checked out the
drawing last to modify it. Most of those issues related to poorly
planning for growth on my part, and my boss pushing the wrong person to
modify work rather than leaving it in the hands of the original person.

The best part of our backup system is that the process works extremely
smoothly with no effort based on a free program that we received from a
PC mag based on a subscription. Took 20 minutes to set up 5 separate
daily backups. Now if we screw up today we can go back to yesterday
evenings backups effortlessly, and since we have 5 distinct copies, we
can go back to any one of those copies just in case the screwup was
yesterday.
