Looking for the location of imported linetype

Hey everyone, I'm looking to modify a linetype that that was imported from another file I received from another company. I have learned how to make linetypes in the past and I know where the acad.lin file is, but when I look at the file for a linetype I know exists in my drawings, I cannot find the one I want to modify. I don't want to start from scratch making a line, when I could copy/paste an existing line description and change one small thing for the line I want. I'd like to keep everything else about the existing line because they represent a similar thing with a slight change.

From a sample drawing that was sent to me, I copy/pasted a new linetype from the supplied file to my template file, so now I have that linetype with every new drawing, but have no idea where ACAD stores that info if I can't find it in that acadlt.lin file.

Perhaps this thread would help. Though it’s about AutoCAD, LT 2024 should be similar

@jeff_wine after the linetype is imported it's stored in the drawing

It is buried in the DWG file. Nothing external exists unless you create it or they send you their LIN file.

Thanks you guys, for help with this. Its stored in the drawing with nothing external, so the written detail of the line cannot be found? OK. That's a bummer.

You missed the first reply to this post if that's what you are seeking.

I actually saw it, but the links didn't show up. I see it now. I will look into that. Thanks for bringing my attention to it.

After reviewing my post I realized the link wasn’t there so I just added in. Hope the vlx file works out for you. I’ve not tried it.

Ok, so I found the information and download in that link, thanks. However, I just went on further to use the LISP and I'm thinking I may not be able to use it because I have AutoCAD LT (current version 2022), but just downloaded 2024, not yet installed. Am I not able to use a LISP because I have LT?

Yes only 2024LT supports lisp

OK, more updates....  Firstly, thanks for all the help!  I downloaded and migrated my settings to version 2024 AutoCAD LT. I got the LISP to work, but it didn't do it right. To use the LISP, I had to navigate to the .lin file, which was difficult to find for some reason, the dialog box did not show the same folders as when I navigated to the file location via Windows Explorer. So, I copied the original .lin file from the support folder for 2024 and put the copy on the desktop. I used that copy to navigate to for the LISP. It went through the process and in the command line it told me to use an empty .DWG file. So I erased everything and didn't purge (which is usually what I want to do when I erase a lot of things). I ran the LISP with an empty drawing file and it created a list of the original line types with samples of each that CAD comes with, NONE of the extra custom made lines that are still in the drawing. And there are several custom linetypes.

I believe you clicked on the link that downloads a zip file which runs a command called LINCATALOG.

This actually takes what is currently defined in your acadlt.lin (AutoCAD LT) file or acad.lin (AutoCAD) and graphically draws the lines on your empty drawing.

The vlx file I believe you should try and download is called linout.vlx which is from this link.

I've attached it here as a compressed file lineout.zip since vlx attachments are not allowed.

Just unzip and drag+drop onto your dwg with the missing linetype definitions.

Hopefully lineout will recognize those custom linetypes and generate the .lin file for you.

@paullimapa that vlx file might not work if it contains any of the items ringed in the image below

right, but

1. The program works, as you can read above in his reply

2. He uses the wrong program, as paullimapa explained well

3. The  linout.vlx, which he should use, works well* also in LT (tested)

*"well" doesn't means it works well in all cases.

The old command for simple linetypes, LINOUT1, works well

but LINOUT for also complex linetypes can not handle all linetypedefinition.

Not in AutoCAD and as well not  in LT(2024+)

I don't know what the problem is, but the programmer will check it after his holidays

Perhaps @jeff_wine can share the dwg with these custom linetypes then we can all try to see if  linout.vlx is successful.

@paullimapaYes, you're correct, that is the file I first used. The link you sent for linout is what worked! I got what I needed!! Thanks! However....Now that I've made the new line using the existing, I can't seem to load the new line into the DWG. I put it at the end of my existing acadlt.lin file where it says to place user defined linetypes, but it also wouldn't save. I closed the .lin file, cut it from the 2024 support folder, put it in a temp folder on my desktop, made the change in the file, saved it, cut and pasted back into the support folder. Closed and reopened AutoCAD and went to load new linetype from the appropriate folder, but it does not show up in the list. Then I found that 2024 has a utility to create new! super cool! I went through the process and I'm getting a message: INVALID NUMBER OR BAD CONTINUATION. Some thing is wrong with the code? I have no idea...

Does anyone know what may be wrong with this? This is almost exactly from the original, I only changed a few digits to show 144 on the line when drawn.

If you didn’t change it to 144, what was it before and did that work with the original digit?
