Keep losing Right Click Customization

Anonymous
Not applicable

After going to options, user preferences, windows standard behavior, I checked "shortcut menus in drawing area" then click on right click customization and changed all of them to "repeat last command" and "enter".  I click apply & close and when the window closes, the "shortcut menus in drawing area" loses it's check and none of my settings stay.   And you can't set click of right click customization unless the shortcut menus in drawing area is checked. It appears to be the only place I'm having this trouble but it's a biggie when you consider how many times I would be right clicking to enter/repeat last command and seeing that crazy shortcut menu pop up.  UGH!

Just so I'm understanding what you are doing, when you change the right click customization and click apply and close, are you leaving the shortcut menus box unchecked and hitting apply and then ok and the settings are not working in the drawing?

As a test if you do the following does it hold?

Turn on Time-sensitive Right-click Behavior

Use this method to set a quick click to equal Enter, and a longer click to display a shortcut menu.

  1. Click Application menu Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, User Preferences tab, under Windows Standard Behavior, click Right-Click Customization.
  3. In the Right-Click Customization dialog box, select Turn on Time-Sensitive Right-Click.
  4. You can specify the duration of the longer click. The default is 250 milliseconds.
  5. Click Apply & Close.

Also,

If you log in as a different user  on your system does this issue still happen?

If you reset your settings to default (save a copy of your settings as needed) and apply the customization does the issue still happen?

This helps but it's I like to type my short cut command, right click, execute, right click, repeat and it seems partially responsive.  I've feeling very slowed down because even with time sensitive checked, right click does not respond like I would expect.  That menu still pops up sometimes and right click doesn't always work for enter.  I sometimes have to go to the keyboard.  It's frustrating because you know when you are in a rhythm of drawing quickly it's all automatic.  And this is a very frustrating slowdown for me.  All I want it to do is never have a pop up menu, always "repeat previous command" or "enter".  Is there a way to make sure right click operates that way?

>>>...That menu still pops up sometimes and right click doesn't always work for enter....<<<
You need to adjust the time option to find the sweet spot that works with your reaction times. Experiment: default settings are never the answer when things don't work well.

Turn off DYNMODE if you want the right-click as <enter> to work at it's best.
Otherwise.... since your hand is already at the keyboard typing why not use the spacebar as <enter>? It's worked for me for 20+ years now. Leave the right-click-as-enter for when you're not typing.

Spacebar as enter works great.  It solves my problem.  It will be just a matter of getting used to it.  Thanks.

Try typing SHORTCUTMENU and make sure it's set to 0. That should give you the right click options you want without having to set the time sensitive right click.

Amen!  That helps!!!  Thank goodness for great advice here.  I like my right click.

Just realize that by removing the right-click menu you give up about a 1/3 of the program's easy access and you'll become inefficient and really just a line drawer instead of a CAD Master.

There are a lot of convenient right-click commands in many many places that you just gave up. KInd of like cutting one of your hands off.

Don't go for the knee-jerk temp fix. You'll loose your edge at your office.

Well, then I had better start learning more about these right click options!  Smiley Happy  I'm just now upgrading from an old Autocad LT so I'm skipping lots of version in between and don't know all the new options on here.  But, thank you for letting me know.  The space bar is very efficient for enter so I'm working with moving over to that instead of right click.

I'm having this problem too. I check the box for "Shortcut menus in drawing area" then click to open "Right-click Customization" I select "Repeat Last Command" under Default and Edit modes, and "ENTER" under Command Mode. I click "Apply & Close" and as soon as I do, the right click customization window closes, and the box for "Shortcut menus in drawing area" automatically unchecks itself. If I recheck the box, and open "Right-click Customization" again, the settings have reverted back to "Shortcut Menu" under all modes. I have tried changing each mode individually, but as soon as I change all three, the problem repeats.

SHORTCUTMENU is the system variable that controls that section of OPTIONS: how about adding your desired setting for that variable to SYSVARMONITOR command's watch list and it will tell you exactly when that changed, it might shed a light on what might need to be fixed in our setup.

Yes, I have tried all variables of SHORTCUTMENU and none of them have fixed the problem.

That's not what I suggested you try: please re-read my last post, the intent is for you to find out when that variable changes in your setup, nothing more https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-lt-forum/keep-losing-right-click-customization/m-p/9047445#M1...

Okay, but how do I get my right-click settings back?

At the commandline, type then set SHORTCUTMENU to 27.
Then check and see if it is still that by running the command again: if not, you have a Windows Registry problem than an I.T. person will need to help you fix (either you log-in account is locked or you need a new login for WIndows).

Try it, let us know your findings.

The SHORTCUTMENU setting will stay whatever number I set it to, but the problem with the right click-customization resetting itself remains. I tried the same thing on a co-worker's computer and the same thing happens on theirs. We both use AutoCAD 2020.

Do you have the 2020.1 update installed? ABOUT command will confirm, it is required update.

Works fine here if we are all talking about the same settings and your expectation of course.
