Hi,

Does anyone know if  AutoCAD 2024, will have a new DWG version/format (Newer than DWG 2018 version/format).

Or will it still be the same DWG 2018-version?

When will AutoCAD 2024 be realeased?

For which AutoCAD version will Autodesk change to new DWG- version/format ? (If not on AutoCAD 2024)

Regards

Totally agree with you, but we have had the ability to add custom objects to the drawing database for some time.  You can look at the objects created by Civil 3d or AutoCAD Mechanical.

That's not the same as what I was talking about. Perhaps my comment about entity types was misleading. Civil 3D has to load special dll's in order for AutoCAD to understand the custom entities. Since the dwg format is a database, there are also tables that contain non-graphical data, such as the Layer table. Updating the dwg format means doing things like adding tables or altering them to add columns (properties). For example, adding the ability for layers to be turned on/off in viewports required adding columns to the Layer table to store those properties. Sometimes they can add new features that are implemented by code in a dll. Other times it requires altering the db.

I think I should delete the old format .dwg 2000, .dwg 2004, .dwg2007 on that autocad version 2024, the old versions are no longer compatible with windows 10.11 already

When you say "delete the old format .dwg 2000" are you talking about deleting drawing files themselves?  There is no need to do that.  If you are talking about eliminating older versions of AutoCAD software, then I assume it was installed on older computers, so there should be no need to delete it from a newer one.  The software of old versions may not be compatible with newer operating systems, but drawing files from older versions can still be opened in newer versions.

FYI: If you have third party arx apps add-ons installed, these are the most likely candidates that will require new installs when new AutoCAD versions are released even when there is no dwg format change. So hopefully those developers will continue to update their apps by the time the next AutoCAD version is released.

In AutoCAD, almost everything is broken in Windows 11, I hope they fix this for 2024 version.

Are you attempting to use a version that was made for an older OS?

If they DO change formats to something other than 2018 format- only the oldest versions may not be compatible. To avoid this, I have used the TruView to do a bulk conversion to whatever the latest dwg version may be. When the newest TruView is out, just go through all our directories one by one. It's a bit easier with my "Test Station" PC that I use for betas and testing, etc...

That way, I'm not worried that a file created in Rel. 9 will be compatible. It's been updated almost immediately if a new dwg format is standard.

AFAIK, going from an older version is not a problem. Going backwards without conversion can be but not always. It depends on content.

That's a bit off topic and the wrong version for this thread.

The thing I keep wondering about this is:  Suppose the answer to that question is "Yes" -- what possible plans can you make before you get the new version and have some notion of what the file format differences are?  That is, of what benefit is it to know ahead of time that there will be a new format, when you probably need to wait until the new version comes out before you can do anything with that information anyway?

If the answer is "yes" we need to plan for upgrading a GIS system we have developed (with programmed code).  We want to upgrade the system, and actually I would like the answer to be "yes", which means that it will be another argument for upgrading the system. This is one of the main reasons why we would like to know and plan in advance. I imagine there can be many different reasons for many people to know in advance if AutoDesk plan for a new DWG-version.

@strangby So that begs the question, if this is such a big and important and possibly dire business-planning need, why are you not on the Autodesk BETA testing or even better be part of the Autodesk Developer Network to get all of that inside scoop so you can have all of the urgent dire need to upgrade already planned for?

I suspect you just want an easy answer so you can send someone an email and feel good about it: which is great, always, but not really all that you portrait it to be in reality.

Welp, history tells us that knowing that kind of information comes with an NDA or when the new release comes out.

Anticipation is half the fun of getting there. Enjoy it while you can.

It doesn't matter. Once they change DWG 2018, we will cancel our subscription and look for another product.

you may want to start doing trial runs on an alternate product since based on their previous 4 release dates, 2024 could be out as early as March 23:
