Short mouse lag (3–5s) when opening AutoCAD files – CPU/GPU/RAM all normal

I’m having a weird lag issue in AutoCAD and I can’t figure out the cause

What happens:

When I open AutoCAD or open a drawing, my mouse lags/stutters for about 3–5 seconds

After those few seconds, everything becomes perfectly smooth

The lag does not happen continuously, only right after opening files or sometimes when AutoCAD initializes

System:

CPU: Intel i7 / i5 12th–13th gen (tested both, same behavior)

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4050 (laptop)

iGPU: Intel UHD / Iris

RAM: 16 GB

Storage: NVMe SSD

OS: Windows 11

Laptop (Gigabyte)

What I checked:

CPU usage during lag: below 30%

RAM usage: normal

Disk usage: normal

Temps: normal

Power mode: High performance

Happens even on small/simple drawings

After the initial lag, AutoCAD runs completely fine

GPU confusion:

In Task Manager, AutoCAD sometimes shows:

No GPU engine

Or “GPU 1 – Copy” instead of NVIDIA

I tried forcing AutoCAD to use the NVIDIA GPU (Windows graphics settings + NVIDIA Control Panel)

Issue still happens

Other notes:

UI lag is worse when AutoCAD panels are fully expanded

If I minimize panels (tabs/buttons), mouse lag is reduced or gone

This makes me think it’s UI / graphics initialization related, not raw performance

Hello, there is a little more information that could be helpful.  Please share with us the version (including updates) of AutoCAD and what type / model of mouse you are using.  Are all drivers up to date?

@emile_madi Where are you storing your files? How are you accessing them from your laptop

Is this a VPN connection?

USB drive?

Something else?

OS is? Year version of AutoCAD is? Have you installed the latest AutoCAD Update yet? ABOUT command in your AutoCAD will confirm what you have installed, compare that to your Accounts Updates list or grab a screenshot and paste it over here for guidance. 

Since you are reporting GPU issues... Set GFXDX12 variable to 0 (that's a zero): a restart of your AutoCAD is required for it to take effect.
